Saturday morning
Dec. 29th, 2012 10:14 amSo, it's cold, and grey, and either sleeting or raining outside. I'm glad I have nothing to do that requires me to go further than the basement (where the washer and dryer live) today, unless it's out to pick up some Indian takeaway to eat with friends. I was bummed the other morning when I had to go to work and it was all rainy--not because I'd get wet but just because it was a perfect day to stay home with the kitties. Today is another of the same. :-) Heh, looks like it's raining out front and snowing out back. Well, me and the sleeping cat who is snoring gently and twitching are dry and warm.
The holidays are almost over, and I seemed to have managed not to add the storied 5 to 10 pounds that average North Americans are said to gain between Thanksgiving and Christmas. (More recent research, I gather, suggests that's just *overweight* Americans and that, on average, most people gain only a pound or so--I also seem to have missed that). But I haven't made much progress this year in getting more fit, so that's something I need to look to in 2013. I'm not making (or at least publishing) any resolutions, though. I made a list of ten things to do this time last year, and I've done maybe one of them, so my track record is not good.
OK, looking more like snow on both sides of the house, now. I think I need to make some tea. :-)

one of those days
Apr. 1st, 2012 04:04 pmI've been shorting myself on sleep lately, and I was planning on catching up on some of it today. But it's a beautiful day! I don't have quite enough energy to *do* anything (take Rupert for a ride somewhere, go down to Rock Creek Park and hike), but I hate wasting the day. I miss the old house--what would be perfect right now would be a hammock to nap in in the sunshine (OK, so I'd need to wear a fleece and some wooly socks, but still...)
I got something quite remarkable the other day--a letter from the DC Department of Motor Vehicles saying that I had overpaid a parking ticket and they would be sending me a refund check for $25! Now, I'll believe it when I see it, and I think they're right (I paid a ticket in full during the recent amnesty, when they were supposed to discount tickets, but their online system didn't know about the discounts). But, still. DC Parking giving money back. Remarkable.
Also, after having helped
john_arundel and
gr_c17 empty a minikeg of Newcastle yesterday, plus a few other assorted bottles, I checked my BG this morning, and it was lower than it has been in weeks! Confusing. I've put on a pound or two, but I've not been eating as sensibly as I ought in the last week--that I can fix.
I am going to try and clean at least one room today. If I can do that, and then do one more each Monday and Tuesday, that will be half the flat tidied up, any way... And in other good news, I seem to have managed to save enough to erase my standing deficit (the result of doing most of last year's charitable giving right at the end of the year) and begin putting money into savings again. Thinking of doing away with the cable and landline phone so as to increase the weekly Micawber Figure.
Added some more photos to the library, stuff from my birthday and from one or two recent wargames. And I've been doing some reading; but that needs its own entry.
All this and no April Fool's joke yet!

Delicious! The latest entry in my log of Thai cooking is a dish of Chiang Mai noodles. Really, there is no greater culinary marvel than noodles combined with a peanut sauce--a thick, rich, creamy peanut sauce.
Tomorrow I start in on a course of South Beach Diet--I've done it before, and I tend to stick more or less to its basic principles when cooking. But when I saw the doc last, he said "If you really want to lose weight, exerciser is good, but how you eat is essential." (Mind you, I swear that last time he said it the other way 'round.) And there's no question that I need to lose 50-60 pounds. Now, it took many years to pack it on, so it will take years to pare it off, and exercise is an important part, but cutting out starch and most fat for a week or two and then gradually adding a little bit back in will certainly help.
But tonight I'm enjoying the last night of unlicensed liberality. Wine, beer, noodles, cocoanut milk--the farthest bounds of dissipation! And, oh, but this peanut sauce is luscious!

Nov. 21st, 2011 07:49 amThere used to be a challenge at the gym I went to at work: get through the winter holidays without gaining any weight! Everyone who signed up to and succeeded got a free sweatshirt.
So far in November I've lost two pounds. Though that's kind of like being ahead by less than the margin of error in a poll--it may just be the result of random variation--it does suggest I haven't gained any. I'll try to keep it that way through the first week in January, and then go back to actively trying to lose it...

The weather has been great; cool but pleasant yesterday, rain overnight; today it will be warm, nearly 80*F, and sunny. For more than a week now, my fasting blood glucose has been below 126. My weight is down to a range it hasn't been in three years. I got a very positive annual review. ( And other things are going well, too )

Feb. 5th, 2011 12:33 pmAh, the dangers of slacking off for a day or two, Doing my 10/10 today involved doing more like 15/10. What a cold, rainy day--it reminded me of running laps in JV soccer, with our pitted, muddy field.
The BG testing is going fine so far. The quack suggested I try all sorts of different times of day as well as the morning jab. I had one reading of 210 right after a huge lunch/dinner the other day (an entire Chipotle burrito), but the morning jabs have been good: 135, 115, 108 today. Not sure I understand why, when I checked after running, it was back to 135--does exercise elevate BG because the body is dumping it into the bloodstream to burn? I need to read more of the literature they gave me.
And down a couple of pounds as well; let's hope that trend continues.
And now for a shower, some brunch, and a ton of cleaning. Dust, vacuum, laundry, some scrubbing and mopping. And a quick trip for some groceries. Why, yes, I *am* having some company this evening--how did you guess? :-)

Nov. 14th, 2010 08:28 pmI had tickets for another concert tonight, but I decided not to go.( Read more... )
He probably looks as rubbish as me!
I went out for just a little bit of exercise, since it's been so long since I've gotten any. I ended up walking most of the two miles, plodding really, though I got up to a jog for at least thirty seconds together a couple of times.
Whoosh. I am *so* out of shape. My legs need some tone, but it's mostly what's been an issue all me life--wind. Even when I played soccer in high school I never had decent wind, and 30 years and many stone of excess baggage have just made it worse.
*sigh* Well, it didn't grow there overnight, so there's no hope thinking that it will go away except over time. And with LOTS more exercise....

Oct. 27th, 2009 09:11 amMuch in need of updating, but insufficient time just now.
What I do have to say is this--after losing some weight over the summer, I've put it back again and more. It's the result of totally falling out of the habit of daily exercise (awful!) and back into some bad habits of eating and drinking (comfort eating, fast food meals, too much starch and not enough veg, drinking a little too freely).
No advice or support required; I'm just acknowledging this problem and putting down a marker to myself that I need to get back on track.

Jul. 15th, 2009 01:40 pmIn other news, I had a trip to the doctor today for a physical. Still waiting for the EKG and bloodwork results, and I'm supposed to go have a chest x-ray, both otherwise nothing out of the ordinary to report. He pointed out that I need to lose weight, and I agreed and said I'm trying to lose ~60 pounds (not very hard I've not been, lately, but that needs to change). He said that would be a good target, as I'd be much healthier and at less risk if I did. I really like this PA I've lucked into; he's nice, straightforward, calm, patient, listens to you, and talks sensibly.
I love the logic of biology
Jul. 9th, 2009 06:07 pmTwo days ago, I was using the imperfect method of calculating postage for packages by getting on my (electronic) scale with the package, then resetting it and getting on without and assigning the difference to the package (because, honestly, anything under the weight of a small child is not going to turn the scale on). At the time, I noticed with annoyance that I had put on two pounds from my week-previous weight of X (and, yes, I always weigh myself in the same way at the same time of day, usually once a week). So an annoying X+2.
Today, I had to move the scale (the cats move it around sometimes), and just for laughs checked again. X-2. Yes, there are always random fluctuations depending on all sorts of variables, and when X is as high as it is in my case, a coupe of percent margin of error adds up to a couple of pounds (so, really, any weight gain/loss under two digits is kind of in the "poll's margin of error" :-)
But, really? Four pounds in two days? :-) *rolleyes* WhatEVER.

Last week or two, scale has reliably said "weight X" plus or minus a pound or two. Yesterday morning it said "weight X-5" and I was very pleased that starting to get some more exercise and eating more sensibly was having some effect. I double-checked, just to be sure.
Then this morning I checked, and it was back to "weight X". Dude, I did not eat five pounds of food yesterday!

bike catch-up
Jun. 17th, 2008 09:18 amI seem to have missed out a huge number of bike entries, or I didn't tag them. I guess this is part of the big catch-up on journaling that I need to do. ( Read more... )
