Oct. 19th, 2011 11:18 amI'm nearing the midpoint of my little minibreak. I was very pleased with getting a few more mundane tasks accomplished yesterday (a haircut, a couple of loads of laundry, and groceries for a week or two) when I stopped to tot up all the tasks I'd set myself for this week: 37 of them in 12 categories, 7 of them breaking down into 18 subtasks. And I've gotten precisely 5 of those 37 accomplished. I need to get going. And I need to prioritise: stop doing things I can do any time I'm home, and do things that I need to do during the day when I would otherwise be at work.
As an aside, I tried some kefir last night, and I found it quite delightful. This was pomegranate-flavored kefir with a fair bit of sugar in it, to judge by the label and therefore not something I'll be drinking gallons of; but I was struck by the fact that it has less fat and less cholesterol and more fiber and more protein than a corresponding amount of 1% low-fat milk. And it's tasty (OK, that's probably the sugar...) I also got some lassi, but I haven't tried that yet.

They need a bit of culling still, and I haven't started captioning them, but hopefully people will find some of them interesting.

Back in the US
Sep. 11th, 2010 01:40 pmWell, here I am in lovely Newark Airport, waiting for my connecting flight to home and kitties. Some of my friends in Edinburgh shared a nice couple of drinks and dinner with me, and the kindly Antiquarian ferried
pisica home and me to my hotel.
I had a lovely holiday, which I'm now mourning (I've gotten through denial, anger, and depression and am somewhere between bargainingmand acceptance :-). I did a load of laundry in Kirkwall, so at least I don't have that chore when I get in. Time to scan my jammed mailbox, I suppose.

Vermont, Day Two continued
Aug. 23rd, 2010 06:33 pmGood lord! I have no Vermont icon *and* no Rev War icon? What have I been doing all this time? :-) ( the rest of Friday )
Vermont, Day 2

Aug. 12th, 2010 10:03 amI'll post entries with separate links later, but the photos from my trip to Vermont are online.
Something odd happened in the camera, so they came out all jumbled; sorting by ID# is messed up somehow. I'll resort them properly later too.

Back home! (for now...)
Aug. 10th, 2010 11:38 pmWell, I'm tired and sweaty and stinky from 8 solid hours of travel (including a spring in Phillie Airport to catch my connection), but I'm back and going to leap in the shower and then a bath. Alas, the greeting of every cat owner--hungry cats and half a dozen hairballs needing to be cleaned up. But on the up side, Finn's fur is really coming back noticeably--he's almost black again! :-) I guess it just takes a lot longer to come back from being basically gnawed down to the skin than just from having one spot shaved.
Ugh, the weather and the drivers instantly reminded me why I wanted to get away from here. I may not be able to wait another year to start my hobbity travels...
More on VT once I've cleaned up and had a day to unpack and do laundry (apparently our house has new washers coming this weekend!)

Jul. 28th, 2010 09:50 pmSo, I'm finally getting my summer vacation, not quite a week in beautiful Vermont (a reprise of last summer). Sadly, I'll miss game night at Quarterstaff, but I have my eye on doing a couple of the historic sites I missed last time, like the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum (if it's still there--its website seems to be down). I'm also hoping to catch the end of the Mozart festival and to do some hiking, sailing or kayaking, and generally relax and take it easy!
Anyone have suggestions for place to go or things to see? I did the Ben & Jerry tour last time, so I think I can pass on that :-) but I do have my eye on The Alchemist in Waterbury...

When I did my timecard today, for the first time in forever* I was not told that I had negative leave that I had to promise to pay back if I quit before my next time card.
Instead, I find upon checking that I am the proud possessor of 0.440 hours of leave! I will try not to spend it all at once...
*Technically since a certain trip abroad in January 2008.

here we go!
Mar. 9th, 2010 04:34 pmOK, requested the leave at work and started booking flights and rooms. The plan is to leave on the 3rd, arriving on the 4th, spend through the 7th in Amsterdam seeing the city and taking little day trips to Den Haag, Haarlem, and Oosterbeek/Arnhem, then take the train (well, three trains, it looks like) up to Harlingen and spend several days there enjoying the sea air, maybe take a trip out to the islands, then train back to Schipol and home on the 11th.

Feb. 24th, 2010 05:18 pmSo, ignoring my pending unemployment, the frightful weather lately, and what feels like an impending cold, I'm continuing to plan my April vacation in The Netherlands. So far, I've got a few ideas of things that I plan to see or would like to see (the Rijksmuseum and the Poezenboot :-) in Amsterdam, the Mauritshuis and Madurodam in Den Haag, Delft, the Hartenstein Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek, a couple of national parks, Harlingen and maybe one of the islands in Frsylan).
I picked up some suggestions back in January when I first mentioned this. Any others?
ETA: Oh, I also spotted the Dutch East Indiaman The Amsterdam--that ounds like it must be worth a visit. And maybe the Hortus Botanicus.

Jan. 27th, 2010 03:40 pmSo, I don't think I've said here yet, but I'm planning a spring trip abroad, and for various reasons I've picked the Netherlands as my destination.
redactrice has already been helpful, giving me advice on things to see and places to go and sharing links from her favourite travel boards. My buddy Justin has made two excellent suggestions, based on his travels to see Dutch in-laws. One is a feast for the eyes; another is a feast for all the senses.
I've started reading an excellent book called "The UnDutchables", a humourous but sincere look at culture and society of the Netherlands (that it's as popular in the NL as in the US and UK suggests to me it's pretty insightful). And I'll start planning soon what I want to see my first time there (I'm assuming that it will not be my last!)
Any suggestions are welcome!

Well, this definitely qualifies for the "oh, bugger!" icon. A thread of gloom has slipped into my idyll, in that I've realised that I'm not going to be able to turn around and take another holiday the first week in September. :-(
First of all, I forgot before I left that I have to hand in an itinerary to work a month beforehand if I'm travelling out of the country (even to the UK). And I haven't done that, because I hadn't even the faintest idea where I was going to stay yet. Then, when I was wondering whether they would be willing to bend that rule, I remembered that I need to file my timecard for this week. And realised that I'm going to max out the amount of leave I can "borrow" (i.e., take before I've earned it) this week, and so won't be able to borrow more within a month for another trip. I had thought I calculated this all out carefully, but apparently I goofed somewhere. It's going to be another couple of months before I can take another week off.
Apologies to those I was hoping to see--I seem to manage to do this far too often. My falling out with my friend in Glasgow, Dad getting sick, the car breaking down, my running out of leave... I don't seem to do well with planning trips there; I don't think I'm even batting 50% for executed out of planned. :-(

Aug. 1st, 2009 09:56 pmWow, one day of vacation (not even a whole one yet) and I'm already feeling 100% relaxed. It's beautiful up here, and even being a bit warm it's still so much nicer than in DC. Starting with the immense lake a short distance away, and the mountains (Adirondacks to the west and Green Mountains to the east). ( Read more... )
