Jan. 27th, 2010 03:40 pmSo, I don't think I've said here yet, but I'm planning a spring trip abroad, and for various reasons I've picked the Netherlands as my destination.
redactrice has already been helpful, giving me advice on things to see and places to go and sharing links from her favourite travel boards. My buddy Justin has made two excellent suggestions, based on his travels to see Dutch in-laws. One is a feast for the eyes; another is a feast for all the senses.
I've started reading an excellent book called "The UnDutchables", a humourous but sincere look at culture and society of the Netherlands (that it's as popular in the NL as in the US and UK suggests to me it's pretty insightful). And I'll start planning soon what I want to see my first time there (I'm assuming that it will not be my last!)
Any suggestions are welcome!

bloody hell!
Jan. 5th, 2010 11:50 pmIt being Twelfth Night, I took down my Xmas decorations (mini fake tree with baubles, fairy lights, Xmas stocking). The living room looks very sad without their cheery glow. Bare. Joyless. :-( Ah, well, it's January...
Plus, I think I need to have my friends downstairs up for cake and lambs wool. They invited me down for King Cake last year, and I got the "king" in my slice (I'd be hard pressed to say it brought me luck in 2009, though...)

From the professional society I belong to:
The office will be closed from 12 noon on 24th Dec and will re-open at 9 a.m. on 4th January.
XXXXX would like to wish all of its members a very happy Christmas and New Year.
From the postgraduate programme I'm enrolled in, emailed this morning:
The XXXXX is now closed for the Christmas Holidays.
We will be back in the office on Wednesday 06 January,
Merry Christmas to you all.
Weekdays my current employer's office is closed in the next two weeks:
25 December and 1 January.

I'm looking at cottages to book for my trip in September and have narrowed it down to a couple in places near Inverness and the Black Isle. Thing is, while a couple are just right for me ("sleeps 2") a couple that are in my price range are a bit bigger ("sleeps 4-5").
Anyone fancy a week in the Highlands in September? ;-) I'd need to know fairly soon (I need to make the res. before they're all booked...)
ETA: So, it sounds like no takers. That's as I expected, but I thought I'd check.

Dec. 30th, 2008 12:47 pmIn order to take one of my holidays as leave on other than one of the designated company holidays, I need to designate it as an alternate holiday:
"Alternate holidays must be based on a specific event or milestone, i.e. employee wedding anniversary, birthday of employee or immediate family (spouse, domestic partner, or child), or commonly observed holidays (regional, cultural or religious) such as those found on the diversity calendar."
Looking at the diversity calendar, I see that the first Monday of the first week in February next year will be Imbolc.
So, I'm asking HR for leave to go to visit friends in the UK for Imbolc. :-)

giving gifts of giving
Dec. 6th, 2006 02:22 pmSomeone posted a link last year to a site that acts as a compendium of "give a donation to a worthy cause as a gift" opportunities. I couldn't find the exact same one, but here are some of the ones I did come up with.
http://www.practicalpresents.org/
http://www.greatgifts.org/
http://www.giftsinaction.org.uk/
It wasn't this one, but I like them anyway!
http://www.thebrookeshop.org/
The idea of gifts for hard-working doneys and horses is wonderful!
And, for the older people on your list
http://www.cowsnthings.org.uk/
And of course I'm always partial to
