I meant to go out for a hike today, but I didn't. [livejournal.com profile] gr_c17 and [livejournal.com profile] soccer_fox came over, and we sorted through the kitchen stuff so that N could collect what of that was hers. Pretty much the only thing left of hers here is the big wardrobe in the front room and its contents, and they're going to haul that off later in the month after she's been to see her folks.

It feels kind of like the early scene in "Comfort & Joy", when Alan is helping Maddy and her friends move her stuff out of their flat. Only it's not quite so bare. :-)

Early dinner, I think, and a movie and then bed. It'll stop me brooding...

ETA: Oh, and the house I liked so much I even asked the estate agent to send me the comps and disclosures? Someone's already put in a contract on it. Second or third time this year that's happened--I think there's a message here. :-)

It would seem that though Neta severely bruised her knee, probably banged up the nerve along the front side, and may have strained some muscles, nothing got torn or broken. Which is good to know, since she's still limping and in some pain, even though the soccer-related collision (one slender female defender vs. one taller, heavier male attacker, running into each other at full speed) was a couple of weeks ago. The orthopedist also detected some mild sciatica; PT was prescribed for the knee, and ibuprofen for the sciatica...

I seem to have missed out a huge number of bike entries, or I didn't tag them. I guess this is part of the big catch-up on journaling that I need to do. Read more... )

I was commiserating with [livejournal.com profile] soccer_fox about her hectic schedule (she's working on the Hill, finishing grad school, and getting prepped for her new job, all at the same time--any wonder why she is so tired?) I pointed out that she has a *lot* of things going on (all of the above plus playing on two soccer teams, refereeing, DC United season tickets, and occasionally spending time with me, her friends, and her cats! :-)

She quite rightly pointed out that I have a lot of stuff going on too. I have work. I don't play footy, but I do ref (or I will when it stops raining every weekend) and go to United matches. I like to go hear musicians (mostly, but not exclusively folky ones). I like to cycle (or used to, before things got so busy). I like to hike and camp (haven't done either of those lately) and travel (ha!). It would be nice to go white-water rafting again, and kayaking or sailing. At one time I thought I was going to try to learn how to play the guitar, and I still have hopes of writing (fiction or history or some combination) someday. I have a degree to finish and other skills to learn. It would probably help next year's plans if I were to start doing some freelancing now. I have the whole move to re-plan. And of course, there's the gaming:

De Bellis Antiquitatis (local club, once every couple of weeks)
Advanced Squad Leader (local club, once a month)
Flames of War (buddy in Virginia, weekly engagement)
The Burning Blue (Battle of Britain boardgame PBEM with a friend, ongoing)
umpiring a kriegspiel (ongoing)
playtesting and scenario development for the Too Fat Lardies (ongoing)
various other miniature and boardgames (various friends, as often as possible)

Yah, I do have a lot of things going on...

[livejournal.com profile] soccer_fox went off on Sunday to beard the recalcitrant jeweler in her lair. She simply refused to leave until Ms. Cooper had made the appropriate credit to my bank card. The credit was processed and today, finally, it posted. All hail, Neta, Stalker, Fighter, Gripper, Biter, Neta the Determined, Neta the Victorious!

Honestly, I thought we were going to have to go to court to get this money back. And, reluctantly, I would have done so; $800 is just not a sum of money I'm prepared to let slip away.

Even at the last, Ms. Cooper apparently came up with several more odd stories and excuses, so I would strongly advise anyone looking for jewelry to find some more reliable source of bling. But at least our long personal nightmare is over...

Yes, more... These are Neta's pictures and mine from the trip in January. As usual (for me--I can't speak for Neta), there are some that are decent, a few that are good, and a pile that are "Herro, I have just arrive from Osaka; can I take pikcha?"

There are a pile from our flat on the Royal Mile, from around Edinburgh's Old Town, from the Castle, the Canongate, Salisbury Crags and Arthur's Seat, the House of Binns, Blackness Castle, a lot of Linlithgow Palace, some of Stirling Castle, of Neta and Hamish the Hielan' Coo, and of Loch Lomond. One of these days, when I have the time, I'll go through and caption them properly.

I'll post at more length later on, but we're finally home (with the cats wreathing themselves around us). We're physically and emotionally exhausted--thank heavens tomorrow is a holiday (for both of us, at least). Thanks again to everyone who came to the wedding, and thanks to to Bryan for hanging out with us during the ensuing week--I think things might have come completely unglued if he hadn't. Thanks also to Perdita and her humans for a nice evening in Fife--I'm sorry we didn't have a chance to visit with more people. Hopefully we will do that next time.

arrived!

Typing from an Internet cafe in Edinburgh!

Limo tried to leave before we were ready to go, flight was delayed going into Chicago, leaving Chicago, shared a row with a under-two-year-old named Thomas and (at any one time) one of his parents. Baggage fell behind, hopefully catching us up soon. Got into the flat, but when N used the nifty washer/dryer, she couldn't get it to actually dry the clothes it had washed--it just kept steaming them...

Still, we're here. We have the wedding dress. Tomorrow we get the license/schedule. The essentials are in place...

Today: One month from today, Neta and I will be getting married! :-)

Tomorrow: Last day on the contract I've worked on for the last 3 years and 3 months. Very sad to be leaving this good team.

Got an email five minutes ago saying that my visa has been issued and my papers are on their way back. Neta got the same message! Super--we can actually legally *go* to the UK.

Now to square things with the registrar...

party!

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] gr_c17's mum, who threw a lovely engagement party for [livejournal.com profile] soccer_fox and me yesterday on the principle that *someone* ought to and if our families were too far away, then *she* would make sure it was done properly. And it was! Loads of delicious food and drink, lots of fun company, and much merriment. We got a number of sweet and thoughtful presents and had a lovely time!

And belated thanks to my dad--he gave me a gift certificate to LL Bean's for my 42nd birthday which I only just redeemed today. I have a new belt and two pairs of shoes on their way, and his gift paid for the belt and one pair of shoes! Much appreciated, Pa! I will certainly use them "here or [in] the Scottish isles" as the note with the gift suggested. :-)

Everyone be nice to Neta today--her boys (Blackburn Rovers) lost at home to the Hammers this morning...

Now I have to go off and write a short essay on one good observation and one flaw I found in Bernard Lewis's "Islam and the West". The former will be MUCH harder than the latter.

So, I need to make posts about Thanksgiving and work (much to tell), but the REALLY exciting news of the weekend was that [livejournal.com profile] soccer_fox picked a Premiership team to support. Thankfully, it was not Sunderland or Middlesboro, so we can still get married.

Read all about it here.

Of course, we are both going to have to find a Scottish team to support, but I think that decisions should be left until we know where we are living...

Item: My friend Justin gets famous (OK, well, his pets do...)

Item: I got recertified as a soccer referee for the 2007/2008 season last night. The one question I got wrong (out of 50) on the test is still niggling at me...

Item: Bobby Boswell needs a swift kick in the @$$. Fraternising with the ENEMY!

Item: Maybe "Knock 'em dead!" is not the most appropriate thing to say when you're dropping your sweetie off for her first day of (volunteer) work ... at the *hospital*...
