Selfconscious entries by an erratic, romantic bibliophile
Born in northern New Jersey, grew up in Tidewater Virginia, college in western Mass., first real job/apartment/etc. in Boston. Moved to D.C. area in 1989. For many years I lived in a quiet corner of Fairfax County, in what I liked to call an taigh anns na craobhan (the house in the trees--thanks to
magaidhbhan for the translation help!), with my friends
redactrice and
shy_kat and our five cats. In May 2007 I moved to Maryland, where I currently reside with two neurotic but lovable cats (and now their two adopted cousins). I am privileged to have the beautiful, skillful, and clever
asmanyaswill as friend, sweetheart, and partner.
Game geek, soccer fan, history nut, editor, researcher, analyst, booklover, serf to cats, policy wonk wannabe, student of various religions but follower--at the moment--of none. Done many periods of living history, from SCA in high school to 17th, 18th, 19th (ACW), and 20th century (WW I) in later life. Occasional hiker, kayaker, and would-be sailor. Half a dozen years ago I taught myself how to ride a bike (yes, I never did this when I was a kid) and at some point will be trying to figure out how to play the beautiful guitar that
redactrice gave me.
Friends: Found more people on LJ that I already knew than I expected, and finding new and interesting people all the time. Please don't take umbrage if I add you and you don't know me from Adam--you just sound interesting and I'd like to learn more! Feel free to add me back or not as you prefer, and if you'd rather I un-ad you, just let me know.
And don't take offense, please, if I un-Friend you. Work and other aspects of off-line life are reducing the amount of time I have to read LJ, and while I'd like to be able to keep up with absolutely everyone, I simply don't have the time.
"...it's important to actively decide whether at the end of your life you want to regret mistakes or missed opportunities." Wise words from
magaidhbhan
"Our issues, like needy cats, have a way of following us wherever we go." A brilliant analogy by
redactrice
"Life can only be good if you live with someone who likes reading as much as you do." shamelessly stolen from
brisingamen
"The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid". Said by Henry Tilney, in Jane Austen's _Northanger Abbey_.
"It is that fundamental belief -- I am my brother's keeper, I am my sisters' keeper -- that makes this country work. It's what allows us to pursue our individual dreams, yet still come together as a single American family: 'E pluribus unum,' out of many, one." Barack Obama, Democratic National Convention, 27 July 2004.
"Pop the cork, a champagne glass
Raise to the future, drink to the past
Thank the Lord for the friends he cast,
In the play he wrote for you."
