Well, it was slated to rain (possibly), so I thought I ought to get my weekend exercise in this morning. So (relatively) soon after waking, I popped down to Rock Creek Park and went for another ramble. Two hours saw me clamber over about four miles, some of it flat and level but quite a lot of it rocky and fairly vertical (262 ft. of elevation gain along the course--really? it felt like more than that! :-)

This is part of my effort to get more exercise. I was impressed that something I read about George Washington mentioned he walked at least seven miles a day, in addition to a lot of riding &c. I'd have to work hard to get to seven miles a day (just for exercise, that is, in addtion to just normal walking about), but I'm starting by trying to do 7 miles a week. So far, by doing just under two miles three mornings a week (down to the end of our wee local park and back) and then a bit more on the weekend (3.3 miles last week, 4 this), I've managed to do this for at least two weeks. One swallow does not a summer make, and all that, but it's a start.

Now, off to shower, have some brunch, and do some chores.

It's been far too long since I had a regular exercise regime. Looking back at what records I have, the last time I was exercising regularly was the winter of 2010/2011 and the last time I was cycling regularly was 2009. Ugh. I used to do 2-5 miles 5-10 times a month in the old neighbourhood in VA. Here I used to do about 2 miles once a week at least. Then it fell to about once a month. I switched over to jogging for a while and was doing that 2-3 times a week.

So, Rupert and I went out for a bit of a spin. Because I dawdled and did other things, it was getting dark and actually started to rain a little as I headed back, but it was a nice ride. I only did about 2 miles, but I didn't have any shortness of breath or lead legs the way I sometimes do when I start back exercising again. The burn in the lungs, but that's pretty much normal for me every time I've gotten real exercise from age 12 onwards. Had to detour off the bike trail for a bit as there was a medical emergency; first time in a while I've ridden in traffic (OK, hardly any traffic, but still). Not wild about it, especially as I found that my rear bike light has a dead battery (and is probably screened by my rear pannier anyway). Need to fix that and find a secondary light to mount if I have the pannier on.

things to do this weekend:

get extra sleep
put the A/C units in
paint more WW2 figures
sort out mass (mess?) of papers in the bedroom
get more screen for backdoor
get cat food
get out and walk or cycle
clean up desks
sort out back room and transfer painting from DR table
continue research on grad schools
find tax forms for 2010

A lot of stuff for a weekend when I have "nothing planned". :-)

So far, I have done one of the above. At least it was the most important one! :-) Well, I did go for a walk after dinner, but only for about half an hour.

ETA: Got a few more things done. Well, two to be precise . :-)
winterbadger: (running)
I'm restarting my exercise program, so I went off for a quick power walk to start off the day (yes, yes, don't all start giggling at once). Nice morning, brisk and chilly; I think the crocuses that came up all got frostbite, but the robins and cardinals are all still convinced that spring is already here, and the forsythia outside my window is bravely plugging away.

Apart from getting horribly ill Friday night (something I ate) and thus losing Saturday to recovery, I have to say this has been a nice weekend. Mostly because I had such a nice Sunday. :-) Let me introduce a new character to our narrative, who for the moment we will call The Finn. The Finn and I met on OKC about a month ago and have been emailing back and forth. We've been on three dates now and, I have to say, I think she is something pretty special. Some people you meet and the "click" comes instantly; it's almost audible. Other people, I am coming to find, there's no sudden click, just a gradual sense dawning over one of "Hmmm, this person is pretty special, and we seem, mysteriously, to get on very well. How interesting; let's see where this goes." I am really looking forward to seeing how things go with the Finn. We spent Sunday having coffee, walking, and then sharing lunch. And talking, a great deal. It was an exceptionally nice day. Among other things, we spotted a coot. :-)

In other news, I managed to procrastinate my way out of doing my taxes yesterday by going to the Newseum with Da Grrlz. So I'll need to do it tonight instead, as I have to have those numbers for several other bits of paperwork.

I've finished a couple of books and an audio course; I'll write them up later.

I ran across a UK series that I really quite like. Of course, since I like it, it only lasted one season. Called Monday, Monday, it included some actors of the small screen that I'm quite fond of (like Fay Ripley, Neil Stuke, and Holly Aird, who reminds my of one of my sisters) and one gem of the British screen who I think every guy of my age in Britain has a certain thing for, Jenny Agutter. :-) It's about a small (given the size of the head office) supermarket chain; right at the end of it (spoiler alert),
in case you might watch it, who knows? )

And on that rather morbid note, off to work.

Had a nice walk this evening. I was dismayed by how chopped up by street crossings the Sligo Creek Parkway trail is near where I live; it makes it less useful for cycling. So I stopped while I was out getting cat foodses and took a walk down a part of the trail further away (on the other side of Colesville Rd/Rt 29) and found that it is pleasantly unencumbered by level crossings. I went 2.5 miles and only had to cross one road. Hope for the future.

Ah, finally a day where the weather is just to my liking! :-)

Yes, I realise that I'm perverse in preferring grey, cool, rainy weather to hot, humid, sunny weather. Call me crazy.

But it also made me feel like seeing a friend I've not spent much time with all summer--Rupert, my bike! I took him out on a loop that combined my two regular local exercise routes (short and long), about five miles altogether. It was terrifically nice to get out and zoom about, even if I did end up puffing (and often walking) rather a lot.

Tonight was catching up on exercise night. I stayed in VA after work, had dinner, went for a walk for almost half an hour, saw a movie, then came home, fed the cats (who of course proceeded to bounce off the walls), and went out for a jog. Going to have a quick shower/bath and go to bed...
winterbadger: (running)
Your average day (or night)I really have to talk myself into going out to jog, most of the time. Shame sometimes works. :-)

But if it's cold and raining, with sleet starting to mix in and snow threatening, and I can't wait to get home and get my kit on. *shakes head* I guess it's because I'm so contrary and like to do what no one else would (be silly enough) to do.

No wonder I get on so well with... (insert the names of several of my friends I can think of :-)

It was rather nice tonight, rain or not. It was just a short jog (or what's become so for me (10/10). I can't say how cool I think it is that repetitive physical exercise really does become easier over time, if taken in tiny, tiny quantities. :-) I'm up to running (*cough* jogging) four minutes at a stretch, and I really do find when I'm done that I feel as if I've just warmed up enough to start doing something really vigorous, like play footy.

Of course, I had to put something in my calendar for May today, and I saw it came the last day of the training program I'm on. According to which I'm supposed to be running 30 minutes straight that day. Yeah, I still don't know that I believe *that* will be happening...

Time for shower and some sort of dinner...
winterbadger: (running)
My first 15/15 jog this evening. Made it through and to spare, though I seem to be coughing a lot now. It's a beautiful night, and after I finished the timed part of the exercise I just walked back through our little park, looking with pleasure at the beautiful full moon.

I do like living in Maryland for many reasons, but one is that we seem to have a lot fewer streetlights, maybe one or two a block. At night streets can be almost dark (not "out in the country" dark, but dark-ish), and I find I like that much better.

I know that I am probably alone in the entire US in thinking this, but I will be sorry to see winter end. I love spring (it's the best season around here), but I *like* the cold nights. That said, it's nice to have all the windows open and the breezes blowing through.

Now, time for la petit diner deuxieme, some telly, and bed.
winterbadger: (running)
Little by little, we make our way.

First 25 minute session tonight. 20/5, and I actually ran (jogged, slowly) the 5 all together for the first time, instead of splitting it up. Made it with barely a wheeze.

Oooh! Time for the SOTU!
winterbadger: (running)
Oh, I really didn't want to do that. Not because it's cold (I really couldn't care less if it's cold, as long as it's not icy), but just because it was after 9 and I hadn't had dinner yet, and I didn't want to *bother*. But it wasn't that long, just a quick jog (5/5), and I want to keep it up. So I did, and I did what one of my friends did recently and alternated minutes, one walking, one jogging. And it was fine.

I always end feeling as if I *could* go on, if I had to. For exercise, as opposed to a race, I figure that's fine. It's when the day comes that I finish and I *want* to go on--that's when I need to check into Arkham Asylum and restore some of my SAN...

Brunch at Eastern Market yesterday with a friend.

More reorganizing and taking stock. Some sedate jogging. Vacuumed a few rooms. Exchanged some emails.

Dinner: fresh scallops sauteed in butter and then sprinkled with remoulade. Spinach wilted with a little olive oil. A glass of wine.

A little later, tea and apricots for afters.

Not bad for a humble bachelor life. Next weekend I might stretch the culture envelope a little further.
winterbadger: (running)
Yay! I did today's walk/run in the park after I got home, snow and all. It's so pitifully little, but I know it's more than some can do, and it promises to build me up in time to do more. So for now, it's something.

The snow is truly beautiful. It's like having Christmas all over again, only for real now because it's quiet, cold, and full of shadowed whiteness. Snow takes any landscape with trees back to a sort of primeval forest, or at least the echoes of it. I love night snow.
winterbadger: (running)
Well, one thing I can say for exercise, it does have some ability to remove stress. Did my second walk/run session tonight. I have another at the end of the week with a walk in between, then next week it's walk/run every time. Then in February it ramps up to 10 minute runs and four goes a week. I trust my guru to get me there in due course.

Had a shower after and I feel *good*. Making dinner (lamb chop, roasted carrots & parsnips from Trader Joes, rice); when I got home, I snacked on a mixture of olives, artichokes, beans, and red peppers--Whole Foods is expensive, but they have yummy stuff!
winterbadger: (running)
Progressing on my new walk/run plan. Whew, since when did (briskly) walking a mile and half get to be something to work up a sweat?
winterbadger: (blackadder3)
Whew, finally polished off the latest writing assignment! Did my 20 minute walk (actually 30). Fed the cats. Turned on all the lights. Now for an hour or so of relaxation before bed...

Oh, and I've decided that the Lib-Dem dove symbol needs replacing. I think they should have a scorpion stinging a frog.

ETA: ...and invoice away! I love sending out invoices!

Whew! Not a lot less hot-and-sweaty making when I do the same route at 7 in the morning. Still what would be a lovely summer day if it where, not even that much cooler, but less bloody humid. I think my sandals may be better for walking than my running shoes, as they have a broader toe and don't squish my toes together where they rub. Also my Ex Officio boxer briefs may not be breathable enough for all-day wear, but they are *great* at reducing friction and chafing. Sorry, just sayin'.

Saw about the same density of people, which seemed right for a morning when only dog-walker and early risers are up but strange for midafternoon on a weekend. Saw several dogs and their people, but I'm not a dog-watcher, I'm a (novice) birdwatcher, so all that's new that I can report is confirming the presence of several grackles. Didn't see the mysterious woodpecker.

I am *so* out of shape.

I went out for a walk after lunch. I didn't go far (~2 miles), and I'm not exhausted by any means, but I am certainly tired and a few parts of me ache after what shouldn't be that tiring a walk. Even gentle upslopes had me breathing extra. I clearly need to do this sort of thing much more (not that I didn't know that already).

And boy, is it hot! The BIRDS are all going about with their mouths open!

Speaking of birds, I saw the usual suspects (American robins, mourning doves, European starlings, our summer visitors the catbirds, house sparrows--both male and female :-) plus a few not usually spotted. Someone who might have been a goldfinch, but tiny. Someone who might have been a young blackbird (pre-redwing)--like a grackle, but without the speckly and the iridescence. And one or two someones who might have been a northern flicker.

I saw recently but not today a real proper crow (along our stream) and a red-winged blackbird (in the fields out in the country near Bryan's mum's, when I went up there for Neta's soccer party).
winterbadger: (cracking cheese!)
He probably looks as rubbish as me!

I went out for just a little bit of exercise, since it's been so long since I've gotten any. I ended up walking most of the two miles, plodding really, though I got up to a jog for at least thirty seconds together a couple of times.

Whoosh. I am *so* out of shape. My legs need some tone, but it's mostly what's been an issue all me life--wind. Even when I played soccer in high school I never had decent wind, and 30 years and many stone of excess baggage have just made it worse.

*sigh* Well, it didn't grow there overnight, so there's no hope thinking that it will go away except over time. And with LOTS more exercise....
winterbadger: (running)
After having a talk with the trainer in the gym at work, I started on a new exercise program today. I'm aiming for 3-5 cardio sessions a week of at lest 30 minutes each. After two weeks, he wants to re-evaluate and add some weight training. He also recommended drinking more water (at least 64 oz. a day) and snacking between meals, while eating less at the meals themselves. All simple, basic stuff.

So today I started off with 30 minutes on the stair stepper. It was a bit tough, but I got through it without stopping and while managing a pretty steady pace.
