It's been far too long since I had a regular exercise regime. Looking back at what records I have, the last time I was exercising regularly was the winter of 2010/2011 and the last time I was cycling regularly was 2009. Ugh. I used to do 2-5 miles 5-10 times a month in the old neighbourhood in VA. Here I used to do about 2 miles once a week at least. Then it fell to about once a month. I switched over to jogging for a while and was doing that 2-3 times a week.

So, Rupert and I went out for a bit of a spin. Because I dawdled and did other things, it was getting dark and actually started to rain a little as I headed back, but it was a nice ride. I only did about 2 miles, but I didn't have any shortness of breath or lead legs the way I sometimes do when I start back exercising again. The burn in the lungs, but that's pretty much normal for me every time I've gotten real exercise from age 12 onwards. Had to detour off the bike trail for a bit as there was a medical emergency; first time in a while I've ridden in traffic (OK, hardly any traffic, but still). Not wild about it, especially as I found that my rear bike light has a dead battery (and is probably screened by my rear pannier anyway). Need to fix that and find a secondary light to mount if I have the pannier on.

Given how much I like

cycling and

camping.

I've often thought of emulating Eric Newby's Round Ireland in Low Gear in Scotland. But in the 20+ years since he wrote it (I remember doing the book launch work for that...), someone else has probably hit on it.

It is *so* summer now.

Rupert and I went out to the nature preserve up by Ft Meade today, but between my being horribly out of shape and it being even hotter than (I had seen) forecast, we only did 4-5 miles. When  I got back to the car, Gainsborough was telling me the car park was 107*F, which he moderated to 97* once we got onto the road out in the shade.

At that rate, my 86* flat is positively balmy! I'm still going to put the AC units in after I have lunch, though...

Ah, finally a day where the weather is just to my liking! :-)

Yes, I realise that I'm perverse in preferring grey, cool, rainy weather to hot, humid, sunny weather. Call me crazy.

But it also made me feel like seeing a friend I've not spent much time with all summer--Rupert, my bike! I took him out on a loop that combined my two regular local exercise routes (short and long), about five miles altogether. It was terrifically nice to get out and zoom about, even if I did end up puffing (and often walking) rather a lot.

Rupert and I went out today. I meant to go out to Pax Nature, but somehow the morning got away from me, and I ended up with only the afternoon (Pax Nature opens at 8 and closes at 4, and it's an hour away with traffic, so...)

So I went out and rode down Sligo Creek Parkway a little way. All in all, it was probably ~45 minutes (my bike device only records the time the bike is in motion, which was 32 minutes), given how many stops for water and breathing I took. Definitely out of shape, as usual! (Though I think it's time to clean and lube the chain again--that might help.) Not exhausting, but I do need to do this more often (like, daily would be good...)

Someone went past with a group of other cyclists in the opposite direction and said, "Hey, it's Jan!" Not sure who it was (maybe Mark, the local librarian), but it's kind of nice to live somewhere where that can just happen randomly.

Stopped and talked to one of my housemates on my return. He and his lady are off to France next month and watching the strikes with concern. I certainly hope they won't last another month!

I have to take my exam this week. I have six hours for it; I might just take an afternoon off work... Just one more test and I will be all done!

Just one example of how a wonderful UK website highlights cycling safety features provided by local governments all across the country.

I feel safer already!

Rupert is back from his spring checkup and all systems are go. He was reported out with a clean bill of health, and I bought him a new computer to boot. I think he's had almost as many as I have, now. The owner/operator of the new bike store in town looks to be not nearly as much of a feckless tw@t as the people at Spokes, and this was borne out by the fact he was able to install he computer for me without fecking it up.

R and I went out for a quick spin this morning, in case predictions of afternoon showers hold up, and then I covered him up with his brand-new bike cover, which hopefully will keep him a little dry. It was very nice of the landlord to put in bike *racks*, but what I had actually suggested was a bike *shed*; we could lock our bikes to the back stairs, but neither the stairs nor the stands give them any protection from rain and snow. We're not allowed to keep them in the hall (fire hazard), and if you've ever seen my stairs you'd know that carrying Rupert up to the flat is just not going to happen.

Time for breakfast and then homework.

sign there are too many idiots around: when the police sent around a "reminder" not to warm up your car on cold mornings but turning on the engine and then leaving it running while you go inside and have breakfast, take a shower, whatever, I thought "Surely no one is stupid enough to do that?"

sign that I've been watching a lot of 'Ballykissangel': when I biked past an empty pickup with the motor running yesterday morning, the first thing that came into my mind was "Sure, and that's just what the Gardai were telling us not to do!" :-)

Further note: For two mornings now, I've woken up with a 'burned' mouth, feeling as if I'd smoked several pipes before going to bed. The cause? I've fallen back on my reserve tube of toothpaste, Tom's of Maine cinnamint, which is kind of burny even when you've just used it. Cinnamint = in the bin.

I cleaned Rupert's chain thoroughly (though not comprehensively) on Sunday, and he and I went out for a spin this morning. Not very long or very far, but enough to get back on the bike. It's been a bad summer for exercise, and for biking in particular.

Given that it's the first time in forever, things went rather well. I got through the first mile without needing to stop for a breather (though maybe that was because II had to stop at the beginning several times to adjust the contacts for the computer. Damn the black souls of the Spokes service staff to hell--may they always have flat tires!) The weather is worsening, though. It's misty/foggy this morning, and that's because it's humid and getting warm again. The next 3-4 days are going to be an unpleasant combination of warm and wet. Just when you thought autumn was here...

I've also realised that if I ever get a black bike (I'm thinking maybe Rupert is one part of my chattels that should probably stay here in storage if I go to the UK), I will *have* to name him after Black Tom Fairfax. :-)

(For details, see here. And when exactly did Ferdinando go out of fashion as an English boy's name? ;-)

Back to the bike. I didn't get in the full half hour this morning, but I am restarting my daily exercise regime as I promised the medico. And even the reduced bit I did kicked my ass, since I included a lot more of the neighbourhood hills than I have in the past. He said to be sure and get my heartrate up--well it did that for sure! :-) I need to do the full "down to the parkway, under Carroll, and up past the hospital and around the college" route to get a half-hour or more, I think. Still, good to get started... I'm still several hundred miles short of my goal for the year, and less than six months left to go...

Gaming update (yes, Chris and Mel, it's a game that relates to some of your past travels! a little :-)

I had little sleep last night, but I do have the comfortable feeling of an empty laundry basket and a full sock drawer! (Not for me the fate of the Prince Regent...)other stuff behind cut )

I feel like a badger today--a hibernating badger! I went to sleep around 11.30, got up at 7 to feed the cats, was still sleepy so I went back to bed "just for a little while" and just woke up! I know over the years I've accumulated a sleep deficit that probably looks like the federal government's balance sheets, but I must have made a wee dent in it today.

Sadly, I have a lot of indoor stuff to do today (a mountain of dishes, another mountain of laundry, and an apartment that could really use some cleaning), plus I need to get started learning about possible UK degree programs, but I've also simply *got* to get outside and enjoy the weather today--it looks gorgeous!

I might go out tot he park to hike some more

or I might go biking

First I need a bit of breakfast...though at this point I suppose it should be lunch!

oh, and...

Remember I mentioned how Spokes fucked up my bike computer the last time I took my bike in for a tuneup?

It's worse than I thought.

There's a housing that holds the computer itself on the handlebars. The housing is held onto the handlebars by a ring, embedded in which is a nut that a tighten-down screw gets turned though. I thought they had just moved the housing and not properly tightened the screw down. No, they did far worse.

They managed to (a) jam the screw at an angle through the nut and (b) shove the nut out of the housing (presumably because they were so thick that when it wouldn't turn properly, the just kept shoving). So I can't get any purchase to unjam the screw, because now the nut is loose. And I can't tighten the screw down because it's jammed and the nut rotates freely on the end of it.

Which means I will have to buy a whole new computer unit, unless I can find just the housing for sale.

Effing bastards.

ETA: Checked the manufacturers' website. They don't sell just the housing (which would mean replacing the wire and contact too, anyway). So I have to buy a whole new computer. $40 down the drain. Asshats.

Please, DO NOT GO TO SPOKES for any bicycle needs. Their staff is incompetent.

And rude. If you missed the prior posts and you're wondering why I don't just go get them to replace it, it's because the last time I went in with a complaint about a repair gone wrong, I got a rude reply and no satisfaction. Thought I'd give them one more chance because my first few experiences with them (all with their sales staff) were so good--foolish me.

DO NOT GO TO SPOKES!

But the bike ship where I got my bike and have until recently gotten it serviced emailed me a survey. And all the frustration and irritation of my last couple of visits have come back to me. So I replied: Read more... )

I'm trying to avoid posting all the maundering blah that's going through my mind, as I don't want to increase the worldwide incidence of depression and suicide. :-)

Instead I'll yammer about books, my bike, my new doctor, and the ever-present little metal men.Read more... )

Rupert and I went out to plumb more of the depths of the Northwest Branch Trail. Sadly, my half hour or exercise only resulted in 4.2 miles of riding, and I was sore after that--not my legs but my butt! I need to get back to regular riding before I lose the ability to ride altogether! :-(

I didn't sleep that well, so I'm contemplating a brief nap before dinner and watching the Oscars (or part of them) with my neighbours. On the other hand, there are still many, many little men who need coats and hats painted...

Speaking of little men, I had a very nice evening on Friday after work. Stopped off at a local gamer's house and played two very large games of Wings of War (the *other* WOW ;-) with folks from the Washington DBA Gamers (WADBAG) then, appropriately enough, played a couple of games of DBA. My Alexandrian Imperial [Macedonians] lost to a Burmese army (lots of elephants!) and my pre-feudal Scots got hammered by an army of Anglo-Irish.

Yesterday I worked on little men, my friend Susanne came over for dinner, and we started off with drinks with my neighbours Christy and Kevin. Susanne crashed here as it was rather late when we finished dinner (and part of the Golden Compass), and we had breakfast together this morning before she went off to practice fiddling and play with her doggie. :-)

OK, got to unload a few things from the car, then I think it will be nap time...

What with the Verizon guy coming yesterday and me generally feeling lazy, I didn't do much with yesterday.

Today's been a bit better. I went cycling (hence the picture of Rupert); only ~4-5 miles, but it seems I'm still very out of shape. :-( I've gotten groceries, got new mats for the cat boxes, gone to the bank (thank you, Capital Coed Soccer League!), done laundry, made dinner. Some tea and a little more telly while the last of the laundry dries, then to bed...

I watched another movie, The Secret of Roan Inish, written and directed by John Sayles, a Williams alum. Lovely story about people, the sea, islands, seals, and a little magic. No dragons, no fighter jets, no sex (only a very little romance, even, in passing), no explosions; but if you have the sea and waves crashing on the shore, and the lilt of Irish voices, and a little wonder, do you really need any of the rest?
