I can tell I am well into middle age, as I seem to frequently overestimate what would be sensible given my, erm, physical abilities.
Today's instance was going on a seven-mile hike and completing it in spot on two hours. For the first couple of miles, it seemed fun. For the next couple it was beginning to be less fun and a bit of a chore. For the last mile and a half it was "Oh, I can tell my feet are going to hurt tomorrow, but I have to get back to the car, so let's just whistle marching tunes."
Still, it was fun.

Nov. 15th, 2009 09:57 amSome photos (most of them rotten) of my hike in Cunningham State Park, near Thurmont, MD, yesterday.
Also, previously unshared photos from my last solo hike (I thought it was a week or two ago, but it was a month!) in Little Bennett Regional Park.
No photos from the two hikes in between (Patuxent NWR South Tract and Greenbelt Park), as I did those with the Globetrotter, and my attention was not on taking photos. :-) OK, I take that back, this one was from Pax South Tract.
More commentary on these hikes to follow...

Oct. 11th, 2009 07:34 pmNot sure which icon to use, so I'll stick with me (from a hike!)
Just back from trying out a new park hike. I did ~ 6 miles in about 3.25 hours. Short version: I liked the hike and the park, but my hatred for the author of the 60 Hikes book is cemented--he SUCKS at writing directions, and I strongly suspect that none of the entries were updated between the book's original publication in 2005 and the new edition in 2007.
My feet are sore and my muscles are creaky, but I had a very nice afternoon. More after a bath+shower+dinner and some AMU work

Jul. 2nd, 2009 10:15 amGaming update (yes, Chris and Mel, it's a game that relates to some of your past travels! a little :-)
I had little sleep last night, but I do have the comfortable feeling of an empty laundry basket and a full sock drawer! (Not for me the fate of the Prince Regent...)( other stuff behind cut )

Apr. 12th, 2009 12:11 pmI feel like a badger today--a hibernating badger! I went to sleep around 11.30, got up at 7 to feed the cats, was still sleepy so I went back to bed "just for a little while" and just woke up! I know over the years I've accumulated a sleep deficit that probably looks like the federal government's balance sheets, but I must have made a wee dent in it today.
Sadly, I have a lot of indoor stuff to do today (a mountain of dishes, another mountain of laundry, and an apartment that could really use some cleaning), plus I need to get started learning about possible UK degree programs, but I've also simply *got* to get outside and enjoy the weather today--it looks gorgeous!
I might go out tot he park to hike some more

or I might go biking

First I need a bit of breakfast...though at this point I suppose it should be lunch!

Nov. 2nd, 2008 11:35 pmI had a nice, if not thoroughly productive day today. I spent a good deal of the morning lying around with tea, toast, and cats. The afternoon I spent out hiking along the C&O Canal with
redactrice and
shy_kat, hearing about their travels and taking int he beautiful fall foliage. After that we went out to the Redrock Canyon Grill in Silver Spring for dinner, then came back to my place and watched the first two episodes of 'Slings and Arrows'. They loved it, of course, so I loaned them the rest to watch while they're here.
Now, a little more email then time for bed.

Jun. 9th, 2008 05:35 pmOK, another wonderful thing to do to file with all the other cool ideas for things to do.
I like hiking, but I've never been taken by the idea of hiking the *whole* of the Appalachian Trail, as it starts far too far south for my taste, down where there be dragons &c. Doing part of it sounds pretty cool, maybe that section from Virginia north. Some of the long-distance footpaths in the UK and their equivalents in France, Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands also seem appealing.
But now I've discovered that there's even more AT than I realised:
International AT--Quebec
International AT--Newfoundland and Labrador
Of course, walking this would be in addition to exploring all the other parts of Quebec and the Maritimes I want to see, touring more of the Rockies in the US and Canada, traveling to the west coast to see BC, the Pacific NW, and Alaska, and all the traveling I'd like to do in Europe, the Middle East (someday, if there's ever a safe time to do that again), and maybe Central and South Asia. And Australia and New Zealand...
Anyone have any ideas how one can become independently wealthy and spend all one's time doing what one would *like* to do, instead of what one needs to do?
*sigh*

I'm thinking of taking a week's holiday in early September, and I am being hideously tempted by this trip.
Other options would be a self-planned trip around Moray and Aberdeenshire, Fife and Angus, or the Borders... or just going to as many of the events of this year's Blas as possible.

and in other news...
Jul. 10th, 2006 12:13 pmChris, Mel, and I had a lovely weekend in Shenandoah National Park. C&M were training for their trip to Switzerland, so we did an nine-mile hike along the Appalachian Trail Saturday, including about 2,000 feet of elevation change. We saw deer, chimpunks, various birds, and a black bear! Plus several through-hikers and a lot of day-hikers. We were very weary when we finally arrived Saturday night, so we took it easy Sunday (instead of hiking back the way we had come, as had been our original plan). Da Grrlz did some photgraphy and sketching, and I did another short hike (two miles, about 700 feet up and down) so as to see the view from Hawksbill, a mountain we had hiked around the side of the day before. I'll post pictures later.
I have such lovely friends! I am really very fortunate to have such good pals, and I will miss them sorely when we go our separate ways!
