Just watched the highlights of DC's last game of the season, Friday's match at Kansas City. Left me feeling a little sick. Shameful and incompetent giveaway for a SKC goal in the 7th minute, then several wasted opportunities to return, including a goal that a small child could have scored (but Jared Jeffrey couldn't make). There are a few players on this team I hope will be retained, but far, far more who are simply taking up space and pay that we need to find a much better alternative for. There are losing seasons, and then there are crashing the bottom out of the barrel seasons. This team found rock bottom and reached for the blasting caps. Ben needs to get authorization to start clearing the watch bill and finding some prime hands.

Now watching highlights of Montreal v. Philly. Observations from the first half: the Cartographer (Justin Mapp, who I remember coming into DCU as a young kid) now has less hair than I do. And Conor Casey's belly is almost as big as mine. But he can run a hell of a lot faster than I can.

But why does DC United not have any defenders who can mark? With Silva, we seem to have found an attacking player who can attack, but ...

Ugh. Lots of things need to be done. All together it's way too much to contemplate, so I lie on the couch and watch Swedish TV mystery programs. So I've broken down everything into bite-sized tasks, doing a couple of which earns me a little extra something, like half an hour of Annika Bengstzon: Crime Reporter and a cup of tea. Still, about 30 task-items are going to take the rest of today and a couple of evenings this week.

Nicholas has gone to visit his aunties for a few weeks. At this point, I'm not entirely sure what we expect to accomplish from this, other than to give them a bit of cat company and allow everyone (feline here at #4 to have a bit of a timeout and reset. Maybe when he comes back, thigns will be a little less tense. I may take this opportunity to replace all the cat boxes, too. Several of the current ones are many years old, tatty, and *round* (Neta's idea). Who the heck makes a round cat box? Not someone who ever tried to scoop it with a square scoop, that's for sure.

Odd scrabbling noises from somewhere at the far end of the house. Under the floor? In the wall? In the attic? On the roof? Hard to tell. It's happened before. I think maybe a squirrel has a stash in the eaves somewhere.

Nice gaming yesterday (1866), saw Argo, and then had dinner with C&M and watched the opening match for DC United. Some good things, some not so good; Houston is a tough team, so I don't have a problem with us not winning there. Talked to C&M about grad school and got some unexpectedly negative reactions that I'm goign to have to ponder over.

Argo was awesome, BTW. I was remembering as much as I could of Guests of the Ayatollah as I was watching it. Despite it having some institutional flaws, I do admire our Foreign Service. I so wish I could have been part of it. Good work by Affleck (who is one of those people, Julia Roberts being another, whom I seem to be the only person to enjoy their work; ah, well). Marvelous acting, too from Alan Arkin and John Goodman. Nice cameos for Kyle Chandler, Bryan Cranston, and Victor Garber.

Had a very nice date this morning with someone I will call The SCAdian. Brunch in Arlington, lots of good conversation, very appealing person. Hope to see her again.

Right, on with the chores!

Kevin Payne leaving DC United for Toronto FC.

Wow. There have been times that I loved what Kevin Payne did for the club and times that I thought he was driving it into the ground, but he is probably, more than anyone but a handful of the original players, the single, historic face and character of the club. It will be a tremendously different place without him.

HUZZAH!

Nicholas is home from his extended leave.

All is right with the world.

(Well, not everything. DC Utd tied a very contentious game that they should have won, IMO. But the IMPORTANT stuff is all OK.)

Thanks again to the boys' temporary hosts--they helped us out of a tough spot and got a lodger for an extra couple of days. :-)

And thank you to everyone who has asked after Czar Nicholas I and expressed kindly thoughts. He is lying flat in the absolute middle of his realm right now, sniffing everyone who walks by carefully.

And washing.

First off, a link to some photos of recent events.

Not many, sadly, but a few from the birthday visit my nephews and their mums paid me in March, and then some photos from the trip The Teacher and I took to see a little of Philadelphia and to visit the aforementioned nephews and their mums on Easter weekend.

So, because there is too much to explain, let me sum up.

Things are going very well with The Teacher and me. I don't think it's giving anything away to say that we are both thoroughly in love with each other. We spend more time together, at this point, than apart, and we have yet to run into any "hitches or vexations" as they say in the Land of Green Ginger. Well, one or two small hitches, perhaps, but nothing serious. We've gone from marvelling at how much we have in common to noticing the important ways we are different and rejoicing that (at least so far) we are not finding any that pose problems. Mostly we do a lot of rejoicing, as both of us have found, to one extent or another, that we find the other to be, no someone who wants to change or "improve" us (a deadly danger), but someone who makes *us* want to change, or at least to be the best person we can be. I find myself less nervous, less prone to anger, more generous, more patient now that she is part of my life. More than the number of books we've both read or movies we've both loved or ideas we've both been moved by, we find places we want to go or experiences we want to share. And the simple but ineffable pleasure of being with someone who loves you as you are and cares deeply about you... it's such a very nice place to be.

We had a very nice trip to Philadelphia, where she had lived for several years. There's a great deal more to see than we saw, so I for one would love to go back. We spent a couple of days visiting my sister The Deacon and her family in New Jersey. They quite liked The Teacher, and the feeling was mutual. We got back just in time to race around cooking a Passover dinner for some friends, which went quite well, on the whole, even it it started a little late (only 8 pm this time, really!) We've been to a couple of DC United games, to the movies (to see Jane Eyre, which we both liked--I felt it did rather well at capturing the book), and we've started to plan all sorts of things to do together, including several trips and expeditions. I've introduced her to some of my favourite restaurants and to some telly (Slings and Arrows was a big hit! thank you again Christy!)

I should wrap up, as I need to get home and make dinner for my sweetie (who does the washing up, a very nice bargain for me, I think!)

I've finished several books and books on tape lately; no time to review them now, but hopefully I will later on.

Unnatural Death and The Nine Tailors by Dorothy Sayers (12/50 and 13/50) re-reads

I just finished watching last night's DC United match against LA, and I have to say I'm impressed by DC.

Every time you think there's no new way they can disappoint, they find a new one.

They really looked like a competent, sometimes even skilled, team for large portions of the match. But, as ALWAYS, they fall apart right at the end of the match, giving away two perfect opportunities to Landon Donovan (who is no slouch). And, of course, totally blowing two perfect chances to even up the score at the end of the game.

Definitely not buying season tickets next year unless drastic changes are made in management. Why throw good money after bad?

we suck!

Even with United's new acquisitions (a midfielder from Montenegro and a Colombian striker who's scored 6 goals in his last two seasons), we couldn't manage to score *or* keep Seattle from scoring a stoppage-time goal.

The officials weren't helping--one of our guys was pulled down in the box and nary a word said. Fouls were flying thick and fast as nothing was getting called, so the tackles kept getting more and more violent until it looked as if the center had totally lost control.

But they weren't to blame for our failure to generate more than a handful of serious scoring chances. They weren't to blame for the way most of our players can't play through any sort of tackle. They weren't to blame for our inability to stop skilled players from scoring on us almost at will.

There needs to be a serious shake-up.

the good: the weather improved over the evening. Still beastly muggy, bit cooler and, down by the river, something of a breeze. Also, they've finally opened up the last of the parking lot exits and with the finished resurfacing of Lot 8, the parking at RFK is worth close to half of what they charge for it (earlier in the season it seemed like *we* should be getting paid to park there).

the bad: well, you can guess at the result, given that I'm enthusing about the car park. I simply couldn't believe what a lacklustre effort the team put out in the second half. What was striking was that Real Salt Lake was not doing much better. Their decent players, #11 and #7 were quite energetic and dangerous, but they couldn't carry the rest of the team.

the ugly: there's just no other word for our offense. The defense seems to have found some semblance of balance, which may have something to do with Dejan Jackovich returning to center back to pair with the capable but elderly Pena. Najar looked exciting on the wing in the first half, and Alsopp appeared to be making an effort. Even the normally invisible Stephen King (a bit of a horror story, it's true) took one good, solid shot from inside the 18 straight at the net, perhaps the first such shot I've seen in 2-3 years. But he promptly disappeared into the background for the remainder of the match, and players who were supposed to be dynamic, like Chris Pontius and Tino Quaranta, looked as in effective, arthritic, and unimaginative as the thankfully absent Jaime Moreno on his worst day.

Contrary to Steven Goff's prediction, United has not found the combination to the padlock on the points locker. Instead, they put on a rather embarrassing second-half display of ball watching and slow, unattractive soccer, backstopped only by a somewhat revitalised Troy Perkins. Yuck!

Well, that's Thursday night and the 2009 season (league and champions league) done. More time to spend on premier league across the pond.

Speaking of which, I'm still trying to decide: Hibs or Hearts? The Old Firm = not my cup of tea. Got friends and acquaintances in both camps (in fact, my Hibs-loving friend sent me a Jambos strip--how should I take that? ;-)

Meantime, DCU needs (a) a new coach, (b) to part ways with a few older players, (c) a serious approach to getting a new ground.

That is all. Good night.

Packed up my 20mm SCW guys and mailed them off to a nice fellow in California in exchange for a nice bundle on PayPal. Ka-ching!

DC whupped up on NJ last night (2-0--it's as 'whup' as we get right now until some of the older more broken players retire and the younger ones get more experience...)

Playing ASL tomorrow, having dinner and a movie with friends, and taping the USMNT game against Honduras to watch Sunday morning.

Sunday probably consists of aforementioned WCQ, maybe a trip to the farmers' market, another attempt to clean the flat, and a test of Polemos ECW.

Hopefully Monday I will get another game of Battlefront with Basileus Frankos if he has recovered from his minor surgery.

Finished a game of The Burning Blue with [livejournal.com profile] vikingcat, about to start another (Guilford Courthouse) with him.

I was standing all by myself Saturday at the match, feeling pretty lonely. [livejournal.com profile] redactrice doesn't come to games with me any more, of course. Neither does [livejournal.com profile] soccer_fox :-(. My buddy Justin was out of town. Even Shouty Man and his daughter (a ManU/Liverpool family feud that sits next to me with whom I chat) were absent, leaving my row almost as empty as my soccer family. :-/

I do know a fair number of people in the supporters' club, but they're all sitting in the club section, about a quarter of the stadium away from where N and I got seats together a couple of years ago.

Watching United is still fun (though it was a bit nerve wracking this week), but it's a lot less fun without a companion.

As, in fact, most things are. :-/

I ran two lines this morning, ARing a match at 8 and another at 9.45, and managed to come away without anyone extremely pissed off at me. It was exhausting and satisfying and really almost fun. :-)

I was feeling a bit blue on the way home, but I chatted with my neighbours about their cats, who I will be looking after next week, and about a squirrel who has figured out how to unlatch their canister of bird food on the porch (!) Then I did something I haven't done in far too long--I took a shower and then a long hot bath with a book. I stopped reading after a while and just enjoyed the hot water. But I got out when I started feeling sleepy, put on some warm clothes, and I'm going to have some lunch, maybe a nap if I can, like a cat, find a sunny spot. Later I need to do laundry, prep some miniatures for painting. DC United are playing for their chance to go to the playoffs. NJS and Bryan will be over later to pick up some stuff; I may go watch the game she's reffing (her first center, I think, in CCSL!) and her teams's game, then come home and have an early night.

I'm feeling pretty weary these days. Sadness threatens from time to time, and loneliness, but they're mostly keeping at bay what with the opportunities to do things with friends, books to read, videos to watch, Rupert to ride... mostly I just end up being tired. Need to sleep more and get more exercise!

Right now, though lunch beckons, and a beautiful sunny day!

oh, and...

Nice article on DC United's fans

I know and have drunk deep with most of the folks quoted in the article. You won't get much more hardcore than Vlad, Tom, and Paul. The mixed drinks Rumberg (never a man better named!) brings to tailgates are lethal! And I was the one who started the hunting horn trend... :-)

The Cat's Meow

As we awaited D.C. United to open the final stage of practice -- you know, the stretching and messing around session, where no secrets are revealed -- a scruffy, black and white cat dashed through the media room in the RFK basement. (For dramatic writing purposes, we were hoping it was a black cat, which would have finally explained DCU's problems this year.)

There used to be several felines living inside the tunnels (aka dungeons), but most were chased away a few years ago. Now, the rats rule the house.

"There are some big rats down here," said one of the authors of behindthebadge.com

You'd think the cats would take care of the rats. But in RFK's case, the rats are bigger than the cats.
