man, that's a difference!
May. 3rd, 2011 07:34 pmI was footling around on Zillow this morning and pulled up a couple of houses that I like the look of. Some in Takoma and some, for comparison, in Burlington VT (the place that I keep thinking I'd like, after Chris and Mel introduced me to it).
Takoma: 3 BR, 1152 sq ft, $465K; 4 BR, 2230 sq ft, 659K; 4 BR, 2000 sq ft, 615K
Burlington: 3 BR, 2120 sq ft, $345K; 4 BR, 2044 sq ft, 389K; 3 BR, 1898 sq ft, 419K; 4 BR, 2574 sq ft, 429K
That's nearly twice as many square feet per dollar. Wow!

oh, why do I do that?
Jan. 4th, 2011 07:34 pmI left work early, so that instead of twiddling my thumbs doing nothing there, I could do something I need to do here at home.
I left an hour early (which I will need to make up). It took me 90+ minutes to get home, instead of the 40-60 it usually takes.
So I effectively *lost* 30-50 minutes, of which I spent an inordinate amount watching other drivers zoom up to the far end of the lane I was in and shoehorn themselves in front of everyone else patiently waiting.
And, of course, I'll have to work an extra hour later in the week.
Huzzah.
I hate DC traffic.

First significant winter storm of the season may bring 5+" of snowfall to the area tomorrow.
The National Weather Service has issued a WINTER STORM WATCH for Montgomery County from Sunday Morning through Sunday night. A strong low pressure system has developed over the lower Miss valley, and is expected to move through the region tomorrow. This is expected to be an all snow event for Montgomery County.
Residents should begin Winter Storm preparations which should consider the potential of significant (5+") snow accumulations within the next 48 hours. Please remain alert for the issuance of additional winter weather warnings.

Happy holidays from Montgomery County!

5" will seem like pretty small beans to a lot of my friends and readers elsewhere, but in DC that's a sizable, if not huge, snowfall, and will probably put a damper on the holidays of the people with jobs int he Department of Public Works, who are all probably getting calls on Xmas Day to come into work to start making preparations.

Jun. 2nd, 2010 07:17 amI've mentioned that I go back and forth across the Potomac Gorge pretty much every day and often see herons and other remarkable birds there. No herons immediately visible, but here are some nice photos of the Gorge put together by the Nature Conservancy.
DC snow day 2!
Dec. 20th, 2009 01:20 pm Whew! I've been out shovelling for a couple of hours, and I'm pooped! Kev the downstairs neighbour and I dug out the driveway, so the two people who live in the basement apartment on that side can get out. Then we dug out our two cars and the car of the other folks on the first floor (they had started the shovelling yesterday, so Kevin felt we owed them). The other second floor people had cleared out their car earlier from across the street (where luckily it hadn't been hit by a plow) and then dug out a place for it on the house side. And the other basement folks, being Coloradans, had not only dug out but were off somewhere getting groceries and so on. :-) They had also done the walks another time this mornign, so everybody has been pitching in. :-)
I'm trying to decide between a hot bath and just flopping on the couch and watching more MSCL. Of course, I could always have the hot bath and *then* flop on the couch. :-)

Yes, Washington is having one of its rare snowstorms. They started out predicting 4-5" and ended up last I heard around 24". There were at least 6 on my wheelie bin this morning before I put it away. I contributed one pass to the house project of trying to keep our front steps and walk to the street clear, and by the time I had gone all the way up there were at least a couple of mm of snow where I'd been. Ah, well, it's exercise and it gives me an opportunity to wear my foul weather gear (wonderfully warm and dry and almost emergency services yellow).
The snow started about four hours early, right when
shy_kay and
redactrice and I were going in to the Natalie MacMaster concert in Fairfax. When we came out, snow had blanketed everything thinly, and people were driving about 5 mph almost everywhere. It took me about 2.5 hours to get home (I would expect normally it would take about an hour at that time of night). It could have been worse, though. Apparently some people were stuck out on the highway all night.
But once I got home and didn't have to deal any more with the idiots driving far too slowly and the idiots driving way too fast, and the fact that there were large numbers of plows sitting by the side of the highway idling their engines while the snow on the road was a couple of inches deep... once I got home I could just drink in the dark and the white and the sound of silent snowfall. It was lovely. I stayed up very late (because I couldn't bear to go to bed), and then finally fell under the covers, waking hours later to find the snow is still falling...and falling...

Sep. 23rd, 2009 10:21 pmEvery once in a while, something (usually at work, sometimes a prospective lady friend) tempts me into thinking that maybe I could stay here a little longer, maybe a lot longer.
And then I have an evening like this, where it's LATE SEPTEMBER, I'm sitting around in a t-shirt and boxers, and sweat is *pouring* down me.
My car registered the temperature outside as 84*F when I got in it to go home at 6pm, and that was confirmed by a couple of banks. And it's HOTTER than that in my flat right now.
This is fucking unbelievable.

things to do in DC (before you're gone)
Jun. 26th, 2008 06:55 pmI've been wishing I were in the UK a lot lately, missing the places that I've been that I'd like to go again, and looking forward to places I've not yet been that I'd like to go to (in the UK and other places in Europe--National Geographic has a nice article on Como, for instance, and the grrls have great pictures of lots of Spain and Italy that make them look very enticing).
But I won't be doing that any time soon, so, in an attempt to take a more positive approach, I'm trying to think of all the things I want to be sure to do and see around here before I leave DC. ( Read more... )

DC United news that doesn't involve rain
Jun. 5th, 2008 12:08 pmThe Cat's Meow
As we awaited D.C. United to open the final stage of practice -- you know, the stretching and messing around session, where no secrets are revealed -- a scruffy, black and white cat dashed through the media room in the RFK basement. (For dramatic writing purposes, we were hoping it was a black cat, which would have finally explained DCU's problems this year.)
There used to be several felines living inside the tunnels (aka dungeons), but most were chased away a few years ago. Now, the rats rule the house.
"There are some big rats down here," said one of the authors of behindthebadge.com
You'd think the cats would take care of the rats. But in RFK's case, the rats are bigger than the cats.

Wow! that is one chewed up footy field.
That's one of the fields that Neta's league plays on. I'm not sure I'll even be able to see the line to run along...
