Sep. 22nd, 2009 08:39 amI cleaned Rupert's chain thoroughly (though not comprehensively) on Sunday, and he and I went out for a spin this morning. Not very long or very far, but enough to get back on the bike. It's been a bad summer for exercise, and for biking in particular.
Given that it's the first time in forever, things went rather well. I got through the first mile without needing to stop for a breather (though maybe that was because II had to stop at the beginning several times to adjust the contacts for the computer. Damn the black souls of the Spokes service staff to hell--may they always have flat tires!) The weather is worsening, though. It's misty/foggy this morning, and that's because it's humid and getting warm again. The next 3-4 days are going to be an unpleasant combination of warm and wet. Just when you thought autumn was here...
I've also realised that if I ever get a black bike (I'm thinking maybe Rupert is one part of my chattels that should probably stay here in storage if I go to the UK), I will *have* to name him after Black Tom Fairfax. :-)
(For details, see here. And when exactly did Ferdinando go out of fashion as an English boy's name? ;-)

Date: 2009-09-22 11:18 pm (UTC)Poor wee thing. I wonder if I should come up with a totally different name for my next bike, to shake off any residual karma?
Glad Rupert's doing well, though!

Date: 2009-09-23 03:11 am (UTC)Yes, you are totally right about that. Cognate with "slat," I presume. Seldom used in modern parlance, where I think I've only heard it used to describe a fishing rod.
*snort*
Well, fishing rod!
