Everyone gushes about Waterloo, but the battle of Leipzig, which took place in mid-October of 1813, was both much larger and, arguably, much more important. BBC News have an article on the reenactment of it on its 200th anniversary, but it's so full of twaddle that you'd be much better off just looking at the pretty pictures. Reenacting friends: look at the shot of the crowd: it looks more like the crush at an Open or Masters golf tournament than a reenacting event!

Despite doing a fair bit of reading (not of books) for my class, I've been keeping up the reading/listening. Read more... )

So, Eric, Phil, and I had put in to run another game of Age of Eagles (a Napoleonic miniatures game) at Historicon. Someone from a local group had gotten very excited about the idea of arranging a room for all the folks from the Maryland clubs to share and run games in, but apparently that came to nothing, as we arrived at the con to find we had been assigned a table in the big common room where most of the games are played (Distelfink). Because I'm seldom bitten by one bug at a time, I've been contemplating the idea of double-blind/kriegspiel gaming since I discovered that my new best buddies publish a translation of the 1824 von Reisswitz kriegsspiel along with maps and scenarios for it.

Before diving into that, though, I thought I might try something slightly less complex, so I picked up a copy of Vol de l'Aigle (Flight of the Eagle), a French kiegsspiel kit featuring some very short, divisional-level battles from 1806, 1807, and 1809.

Would anyone be interested in trying out one of these scenarios? I would need at least one French player and one Prussian, Russian, or Austrian player, but more would be welcome, as we could then assign separate players to independent commands and thus add a bit of fog of war.

I'm anticipating conducting this by email; I'd supply scans of the relevant map to players to begin with, then provide text updates and information by email. I'd attempt to conduct an initial briefing and then provide updates and solicit alterations/revisions of orders every week or two (a low threshold is easier to meet than a high one :-).

So, drop me an email at winterbadger at gmail dot com if you'd like to try this out.

...miniature wargames rules!

In this case, having had a very fun pair of games with Iron Ivan's "This Very Ground" rules for the French and Indian War, I've ordered some of their other rules, a set for Vietnam modern skirmish battles and the WWII rules they're based on (since the modern ones a a supplement rather than a standalone).

And, having been scoping them out for a while, I took the plunge and got several background books by a team in the UK called Too Fat Lardies :-), also supplements that deal with WWII battles in the Far East (something the other rules I play, Flames of War, don't address, at least so far). And, since they looked interesting, I also got TFL's Napoleonic tactical rules, in case they might be a fun alternative to the grand tactical rules I already play.

Best of all, TFL take PayPal, and they sell their rules either in hardcopy or, for a discount of about 50%, in PDF. So my lunchtime reading has already been emailed to me. :-)
