N and I had a very nice time at my mother's. We had a bit of a bother with traffic, and we've decided we're just always going down via Rt 5/301/17 from now on. But we finally got there, had a nice dinner, and crashed after chatting over tea and books for a while. Monday we did a few chores for her and took her out to Nawab, her favourite restaurant, for Xmas Eve dinner. On Xmas morning, the Soccer Fox bounded out of bed and started sorting out presents into piles, so Mum and I hurried in with tea and Xmas bread, and the fun of opening presents and calling relatives commenced. We actually got pretty much a full round of the immediate family, as Neta talked to her folks and her bro and his family and her favourite aunt, and my niece Sarah, her sibling Audrey, and both my sisters called. N and I got a good walk or two in every day, and we cleared at least a few small piles of rubbish out of the attic or my dad's office.
I did manage to dent myself substantially. First I got up and went to help my mum who was calling from one of the bedrooms, only to slip on the part of the hall floor I had already noticed was very slick and slam one leg into the corner of the wall and both hands into the floor. A good deal of ice and elevation eventually soothed the goose egg on my leg down (it was about 2" by 4" and raised at least 3/4" to start with), and my wrists have more or less recovered. But then this morning when we were up in the attic and found a leak in the roof, I hurried around checking several other areas to make sure there wasn't another, and slammed my head into a low beam. Serious cursing ensued, and I have rather a bump there too...
But good loot! I got a terrifically nice kilt pin from my sister Cornelia and her partner Lee. Mum gave me numerous fun foodage and some cute ornaments for the tree, and best of all, N gave me a copy of Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers and an expansion for the original Carc that I had NEVER SEEN before! It's very cool. She loved the blue-themed presents I got her (a bracelet, earrings, and pashmina, which she wore the rest of the day looking VERY elegant), the Kanye West CD with her fave song on it, the book about colours, and the Economist subscription. :-D
But the best present of all I got this year was her! :-) I love her so MUCH! It was just a perfect holiday, having her to share it with. :-)
We drove home today, and I'm doing a few hours in the office. Tomorrow and Friday I'll be in long days trying to get my first project hammered into shape, and tonight and tomorrow I need to finish my Middle East paper. Then roll on another long weekend!
