I played Dr Doolittle over the weekend, looking after the two cats next door, the two cats downstairs in one flat, and the three cats and the dog in another downstairs flat. All in all, it was a lot of feeding and petting (and some unaccustomed dog-walking) to do, but fun to see so many furry people.

My own furry people are more or less OK, but Finn is overgrooming again and Busby is having another attack of snot rockets. I went back to the vet (I'll skip the long story about how hard it is to get an appointment and how long I had to wait when I actually got one) with Finny, and we got a prescription for some anti-anxiety medication in *ointment* form that I'm supposed to rub into his *ear* (what will they think of next?) Hopefully that will help. And I re-upped the meds for Buzzer--perhaps being re-dosed will chase his sinus infection back into abeyance. Sad to say, I think maybe it's the A/C he is reacting to, as he was not sneezing so much before we had to have it on 24/7.

In other household affairs, we had an odd drain problem. E did a champion job cleaning the bathroom the other day, but after that, for no reason we could suss out, the drain in the tub stopped working. Well, not entirely, but by the end of a shower one was ankle-deep in water, and it didn't empty for an hour or two. E bought us a snake (I thought I had one somewhere, but I've forgotten where it went--maybe we sold it when we left the old house), but I couldn't get it to go around the bend to the drain from the overflow pipe (yes, *after* I took the overflow pipe plate off :-p) so I had to resort to plunging (after covering the overflow with clingfilm) which eventually worked. Still mysterious, though--no idea what the blockage was or why it occurred so suddenly.

E is very much enjoying not being in school. She had a mammoth ordeal over documentation (!), but she has finally convinced the state of Maryland to give her a driver's license.

Friday E came with me to my work's cookout. It was fun to see all the people I work with playing with their kids (and each others' kids, and some of my co-workers who are really just kids themselves) and to talk to folks outside the office. E seemed to have a good time, and several people told me afterward exactly how lucky I was to have such a nice (and nice-looking!) GF. :-D

We had a grand time going through one of the local farmers' markets on Saturday, and we had a lovely cookout that evening with [livejournal.com profile] redactrice and [livejournal.com profile] shy_kat (goat/onion/garlic bratwurst plus grass-fed hamburgers--you know what I mean!--and cherry and couscous salad and Ben & Jerry's to follow) along with a game of Pandemic and staying up very late watching the Gold Cup final.

Sunday I went up to Glen Burnie and ran a World War Two miniatures wargame, which was well received by my club up there.

We've been talking again about places we'd like to live, and I've realised recently that one reason I'm thinking so much about being other places than here is that I am desperately longing for a vacation. After the last few abortive attempts to get out of town, I'm almost nervous (am I in a strange, low key version of The Prisoner?), but I would love to just take some time, go somewhere nice, and relax. We were talkign about a trip to Iceland earlier, but maybe something simple like a week in Massachusetts or Maine would be more practical and easier to accomplish?

E's birthday is tomorrow; then on the weekend we're driving out to Ohio for her HS reunion and her hometown 4th of July fireworks (oh, and, erm, so I can meet her family...)

Busy times....
