Ah've spent yearz readin' George MacDonald Fraser and listenin' tae Billy Connolly, Robbie Coltrane, John Hannah (*sigh*), Ian Bannen, Bill Paterson, Robert Carlyle and, for the matter of that, Annette Crosbie and Maggie Smith (who is a Sassennach from Essex, but does a good imitation of a hoity-toity school marm from Auld Reekie--and I don't mean Professor McGonigle). I honestly think I could fool a native Glaswegian for, oh, at least five minutes (he'd think I was an incomer frae Stirlin' :-) But one of my deepest fears is that after six weeks I'll start acquiring a bit of a lilt, and then anyone I meet will think I'm "putting it on" and apeing the locals. I'm enough of an *Anglo*phile to know that everyone has their place :-) and that as an American mine is somewhere between the kerb and an Australian ;-)

Mel Gibson must (sadly) count twice, as an American who pretands to be an Australian and pretends to be Scottish (in Braveheart), kicking English butt (in BH and the Patriot) wherever he goes...

I always hoped the director's cut of The Patriot would feature an alternate ending, when Mel Gibson is captured, drawn and quartered *again*, and Tom Wilkinson watches as he is burned at the stake (or something). Guaranteed to sell thousands of copies in the UK and to British reanactors in the US. :-)
