weirdness

Weird like what might be dreamed up by Captain Weird and his squad of Weirodmaniacs. I went to go for a bike ride this morning and my helmet is missing.

It is only ever in one of two places: on the last peg next to my door or on my head when I'm riding. The first thig I do when I get back is hang it up.

I'm feeling like Ingrid Bergman in "Gaslight"...

The bike ride was still nice, marred only by the oddity (Borrowers again?) that one of the magnets that work the computer had gotten misaligned, so that when I got to the halfway point of my 5.6 mile ride, it read 1.8 miles. And when I started pedalling agin, my speed mysteriously shifted from 8 mph to 1.8 to 0 to 7.3. I fiddled with the magent, and everythign was back to normal. But now my odometer will be off. :-(

I saw a couple of people, including a group walking with The Guru, a couple of other cyclists, two women with dogs, and a couple of joggers. I saw one cardinal, a couple of small birds with a lolloping kind of wing beat, but no deer or foxes or other furry people.

It's actually *cool* this morning, which is quite unusual, almost unsettling.

An insightful and humourous, if slightly profane, analysis of recent events in the GWOT (or whatever the White House is calling it this week); many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] pisica for posting the link!

I particularly love the quote from Herodotus in one of the comments. I think that witty bravado in the face of near-certain destruction is particularly wonderful, and I love to be reminded of it. Another example that springs to mind is the (possibly fictional) reply from the British 1st Airborne officer at the battle of Arnhem, when the German forces who surrounded, overpowered, and outnumbered them mooted the topic of surrender.

"Sorry, chaps," came the reply from the "we don't have the facilituies to take you all prisoner!"

None of which is really relevant to the blog post; I just love the bravado... :-)

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] snolan for this link.

Yes, the recent terror arrests were timed for US political purposes, in direct contradiction to what our British allies believed were the tactical and legal best practices of the operation.

Ned Lamont is not a tool of the terrorists, Mr Vice President. You and your party are: you are doing just what the terrorists want you to do: destroying democracy for your personal and political gain.

Anyone remember how the conservative Republicans, including members of our own administration, had identified the Taliban and the Saudi conservatives as potential allies in the UN to help fight against the expansion of women's rights and the spread of progressive thinking on family planning? It seems very ironic that the people who are insisting that they are the only leaders capable of defeating our current enemies are those who until the war began were closest to them.

Were we going to try playing a VASL game one of these days? Is that still feasible? I think it's still possible to do it even if we're not both online at the same time, by exchanging logfiles. Let me know if you'd be up for that.
