winterbadger: (duck!)
Very agreeable afternoon. Did the state taxes (money back, yay!) and spent a couple of hours lying on the grass up at the college, reading and dozing in the sun. I'll see if I can do a couple of things to get ready for next weekend's game this evening, and that will be a 5/6 completion rate for the tasks I had planned. :-)
winterbadger: (scots badger)

Slept in late, texted with my new chum, had brunch, finished re-watching Generation Kill. Time to be more active.

OK, tasks for this weekend:

Maryland state taxes (never got around to doing them when I did the federal)

Get ready for game next weekend

Start spring cleaning

Get tickets for upcoming Birchmere shows

Laundry

Record expenses for last week.

But first I need a shower and some time outdoors enjoying the lovely weather! I think a trip to the park or down to the river is in order. Maybe tomorrow I'll get up early and take the bike down to the Tidal Basin and check on the cherry trees.

Federal income tax refund: pay off lingering credit card balance *and* put money into savings!
winterbadger: (off to work)
One more thing off my list. Federal taxes are done and filed (hopefully successfully) via Free File. And the refund should just about cover the charitable donations that I made at the end of the year (which ended up coming out of savings...)

Now to get some sleep. The MD taxes can wait until next week.
winterbadger: (pants)
I spent several hours this morning and afternoon sorting through all the piles of paper I have sitting around waiting to be filed. I finally got 90% of them sorted into categories, and I was able to recycle quite a lot (though I don't doubt when I finish properly filing them I'll be able to recycle a lot more).

I found all sorts of fascinating things, some of which I had quite forgotten. But I didn't find what I had hoped to: the other 1099 from 2009 that could help me establish the cost basis of the stock I sold. So I'm going to have to pay the full amount of back taxes. :-(

I also found a coupon that I got when I bought my most recent set of contact lenses, back in March. It allows me to get $100 back from the maker. But only if sent in within 60 days of purchase. :-( I really need to be more on the ball!
winterbadger: (coffee cup)
The issue the IRS had with my return from 2010 was that a stock sale was reported to them that I didn't include on my return. The only 1099 I had from the company that handled my company stock for that year showed a much smaller sale (in # of shares and $). But going back to the *previous* year's return and the papers I had saved with that, I can see that I had the larger amount (both shares and $) then. So I must have sold it in either 2009 or 2010, but the company never sent me a 1099 for it, and by the end of the year I'd forgotten it. So it seems clear I do owe the back taxes. :-(

To add insult to injury, they figure the tax on zero cost (meaning that they assume the income from the sale of the stock is all profit), and since I have no 1099 showing how much I gained or lost (and I lost money on the smaller transaction), I can't really contest it (though I suppose I could send them the papers from the previous year, showing the cost value of the stock at that time).

Don't get me wrong; it's not a crippling sum of money I owe by any means (about a fortnight's pay, and I have plenty of savings--I don't live paycheck to paycheck). But I can think of things I'd rather do with the money, and it irritates me that either I was careless and lost the 1099 or the company was careless and didn't send it to me.

Federal taxes e-filed, awaiting confirmation of their acceptability.

Note to self.

Dear moron,

Before spending three hours going through every shred of paper you have (NB: finding a few interesting things along the way) trying to find a printed copy of last year's e-filed tax return to get your AGI so as to verify your identity so as to be able to file this year's return, maybe try looking for an electronic copy. On your computer. In the directory marked "financial files" and the subdirectory marked "tax files".

No love,

yourself

What an idiot. :-(

OK, later, the state taxes, but this allows me to file other forms I need to get in. Plus, I get back some of the dosh I've been handing over all year.

Enjoyed the Diane Rehm Show this morning. DR called out one of her guests on using the term "Obamacare", and when one ultra-business participant said the federal stimulus spending was a failure because no businesses would be foolish enough to use stimulus money to fund expansion, one of the others came up with a major US company--ALCOA--off the top of his head who had done just that.

We needed (still need) a better focused and LARGER stimulus program. The problem was not that it was put in place, but that it was too late and too small. Even so, it helped. We need more government spending *sensibly targeted*, not less.

Two of the participants also debunked the myth that the same pro-business presenter put forward, the old lie that cutting taxes and reducing regulation creates jobs, by pointing out that no such job growth occurred during the pro-business Bush administration that did both of these things, while during the Clinton and Reagan presidencies, taxes had been high and job growth had boomed

Anyone gotten their federal tax form yet? My state tax form showed up ages ago, and I (miraculously) have had all my W-2s and 1099s for ages, but no 1040.

If it doesn't arrive this week, I'll just download the PDFs...
winterbadger: (nighy)
Well, that's one more chore down: taxes are done. I don't think I've ever let it go this late before filing them before, simply shocking.

Swings and roundabouts; I owed money to Maryland but got back money from the Federal government. And thank you! stimulus package for making the state tax on new cars purchased in most of 2009 deductible from Federal income!

What I saved in taxes about paid for the hotel bill from Amsterdam for the place that charged me full rate for my whole stay when I cancelled. :-(
winterbadger: (nighy)
So, beautiful weather out, but lots to do inside.

  • catch up on readings for current class (Intelligence in Low Intensity Operations)
  • complete this week's assignment for class
  • complete *next* week's assignment for class
  • write personal statement for St Andrew's CSTPV application
  • write personal statement for U of E criminology application
  • write personal statement for U of E Islamic studies application
  • clean apartment
  • take Rupert for tune-up
  • complete and file US and MD tax forms for 2009
  • participate in Battle of Bosworth wargame on Sunday

Yes, a full schedule...

ETA: Slow progress, but progress. Six applications now submitted; one completed and ready to be mailed (e-submission not available); two others require me to have hardcopy of my references for them before I submit. I expect I won't actually get into any of them, but if I got into more than one it would, at this point, actually be hard to decide among them.

And I got the grade back for my last class assignment; 50/50 despite it being late and the prof having some niggles about the formatting (why, tell me why it matters which pitch and font an electronic submission is made?)

Snow!!

Not a whole lot (at least so far), but very pretty. Been out sweeping it off the house's walks, and it's very light and powdery.

Another !yay! is that my W-2 from work came. I think I have everything I need to take a preliminary stab at my taxes.
winterbadger: (badgerwarning)
I recall looking into this back when I first started planning to move to the UK and being surprised by what I found.

There's a popular perception in the US that the UK (and Europe in general) loads its inhabitants with burdensome taxes. "Maybe we don't have all those socialist benefits they have over there, but at least we don't pay most of our income in tax!" is the sweeping generalisation.

Of course tax is an incredibly complex subject, and almost any simple statement is going to generalise and oversimplify. And income and standards of living differ in many ways between the two countries. But, from reading a little about it, I think I understand the following, which runs counter to this US narrative: Read more... )

Maryland taxes completed and filed electronically.

Two down and one to go; I have the VA tax all figured, so I think I will go ahead and do the e-filing for that, even though I have until May 1.

After all, after this I still have another raft of paperwork, being a federal contractor. *sigh*

Somehow, this is one of the things that I still get the pleasant "I'm really a grown-up" feeling when I finish it. :-)

EDIT: Bummer! The Virginia electronic filing system does not support part-year returns. I'll have to do that on paper. *That* I will leave until tomorrow.
winterbadger: (great seal of the united states)
Federal tax return in the mail. I can't believe that I took so long. Usually I do it in January as soon as I get the pieces I need.

Tonight I'm staying home from Flames of War night to finish the state returns. Those I can file electronically (I think) without having to pay for the privilege.
winterbadger: (fullness of time)
Once again I played the game the way I meant to, and it looks like I will get some money back from the IRS. I so much prefer letting them hold some of my money, interest-free, over the course of the year to having to pay them more in the spring. This will (I assume) be the last time I get to take a mortgage interest deduction for a while (who knows, maybe forever!), but even without that my withholding and my charitable contributions are high enough that I don't have to worry about paying out.

The weekend was... too short. I went up to Cold Wars on Saturday, bought some cool stuff (mostly books and little model tents--so my little model generals will have a place to sleep!), and played in a DBA tournament. I had the dubious distinction of losing all four of my matches and being the only one of the ten participants to have a negative score! I finished the last battle by the light from my penlight (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] redactrice's parents, who gave it to me for Xmas many years ago!) because the power in a broad area of Lancaster PA went out due to big storms rolling through the area. I left after that, as many participants did, though apparently the power eventually came back on and combats resumed later.

[livejournal.com profile] soccer_fox had an early morning interview today up in Baltimore, so we got up at around 5. At least it's given me time to finish doing the taxes!

Speaking of Baltimore, I saw the last ep (ever! :-( of The Wire last night. I know the city hasn't entirely loved being the center of it, but the last portion (and, in truth, all five seasons) have been such a loving tribute to the city that if anyone were ever going to love Charm City, that show would help them do it.

Check out The Slow Road if you haven't recently; Chris and Mel have a few more episodes of their Spanish travels up, with some lovely photos and tips from where to stay and eat (and where not to!)

OK, that's it for me for now. More news as it happens...
winterbadger: (bugger!)
My mum received a letter today addressed to my dad from the Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Taxation:

Dear Customer: We recently received information from you indicating that you are no longer required to file sales and use tax returns effective March 31, 2007. Please check your records and verify that this information is correct. If it is incorrect, please notify us immediately. If you have any questions or need assistance, please call us at [number]

Her comment? "In view of the fact that I sent a death certificate, I wonder what kind of help they have in mind....." Pure New England Yankee. :-)

As pointed out by [livejournal.com profile] mrereaser

http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dta/

Effective July 1, 2006, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has repealed Article 12, Motor Vehicle License Tax, Sections 82-12-1 through 82-12-12 of the Code of the County of Fairfax. As a result, Fairfax County residents will no longer be required to purchase and display a County decal on the windshield of their vehicle!
