Every time I come back to LiveJournal after a prolonged absence, I find that it's changed, again, and not for the better.

The look and feel is constantly being altered, but--for example-- the visual editor tools are still the same stunted menu of inadequacy that they've always been.

I pay for this service, and every time I use it lately I have to ask myself why.

LiveJournal sometimes seems like a strong person nearing the end of a long illness.

I just checked through the 87 accounts I have listed as friends, and the average "last posted" date is in 2011.

Now, almost 30 have been updated sometime this year. So some of my friends are still here, and I enjoy hearing from them. But nearly 70% of them have left, which is kind of sad.

At least one person I know has died. Quite a lot have moved--lock, stock, and barrel--to Facebook. Some just don't use social media any more (at least that I'm aware of).

I'll keep my journal for the foreseeable future, because I do like to keep in contact with the folks who are here. And I have so much writing stored here, reflections on nearly ten years of my life.

But LJ does seem sometimes like that shop you've been doing to for years, that you really wish would become more popular, but that seems a little shabbier and a little less well stocked every time you visit, always on the edge of having to close its doors.

So, have mood icons gone away? I hadn't noticed that until now. I miss the little penguins.

I am liking Livejournal less and less, but I have eight years of content buried here...

Oh dear...

I think this was not meant to go out...

I've been through and trimmed back my list of non-reciprocal LJ Friends. I've also added back my entire remaining list to my default view, in interests of determining in the future which LJs to keep reading and which to drop. LJ seems a tiny bit like dating in that, if you run across someone new, you take a little time to find out if the two of you are compatible, interesting to each other, and make life more interesting by sharing it. And, like dating, if after a while that doesn't work out, one or both of you will probably choose to move on.

I was struck today reading a couple of journal entries (personal ones, not community or "author's public blog" ones) that this was someone I couldn't remember ever hearing from, and when I went to look I saw that they had never added me back. Which is, of course, totally their option but *if* they clearly aren't interested in sharing with me and *if* I don't really find what they're posting all that interesting, why are they still only blogroll? So now they're not.

I did also drop the two remaining author blogs because, well, while it's cool they have LJs, they're not either of them authors I'm all THAT interested in.

Anyone else missing userpics? Three of mine seem to have wandered off the server...

I would appreciate it if Livejournal would spend a little less time finding ways for us to screw money out of our friends and a little more time getting the system to run conisistently

Is there any reason people are setting up Dreamwidth accounts other than fear that something will happen to LJ? Do they offer some practical advantage or features that LJ doesn't?
winterbadger: (astonishment)
I'm seeing one friends post from this morning (US time) and one from the afternoon (UK time).

Is it really the case that no one has posted since 4 pm GMT?
winterbadger: (bugger!)
That LJ is working on a way to filter Twitter postings out of one's friend list? I really find them tiresome.
winterbadger: (VMars)
Did I post about this comm? It's a super place people share pictures and stories from the national parks.
winterbadger: (books)
I don't usually do memes, but this one actually provides for some interesting follow-up.

Suggest to me:

1. A movie

2. A book.

3. A musical artist, song, or album.

4. An livejournal user not on my friends list.

Respond in comments and then put it in your own journal if you wish.
