OK, coming down to the wire making a choice between Edinburgh and Glasgow. I need to decide in the next day or two.

As to cities, I have to admit I have a slight preference for Edinburgh over Glasgow. That said, U of Edinburgh is doing its best (unintentionally) to discourage me, while Glasgow is doing the opposite.

Glasgow gave me an answer quickly. Edinburgh made me wait and then insisted that I re-submit several forms before they would give me an unqualified acceptance.

I've gotten several emails from Glasgow, including a welcome to prospective students from the department and a personal email from their recruiter in the US, letting me know when she would be in my area. I've gotten one email from Edinburgh, telling me when there are (not even "inviting" me to) some online information sessions. And they're being hosted through Blackboard, which I hate.

The U of E enterprise IT system is, frankly, crap. It's confusing, modular in ways that have no outwardly apparent reason, provides redundant (possibly even contradictory) information in different locations, and is not user-friendly. Just now, I tried to upload one of my references, which came in two PDF files. The system would only accept one as my "reference" but assured me I could add another as a secondary type of file. I submitted the first page, but I can now find no way to submit the other or to withdraw the first and submit the two together once I find a way to combine them. I've emailed them to the address given for the appropriate admissions office and gotten an "out of office" reply, which is not encouraging.

And I've now just discovered that several of the Edinburgh scholarship funds have closed their application window; until now, they had not indicated they had an application deadline, and the acceptance deadline for the program offer is still several weeks off. At Glasgow, their scholarship funds' application deadlines are clearly stated and have not yet expired.

(Not to mention, of course, that Glasgow's tuition fees are several thousand pounds lower, and the cost of living is likely to be a bit lower there than in Edinburgh.)

I'll add that last time I was doing this dance, the staff at Glasgow were quite ready and willing to answer questions about their program, including questions about post-study placements, even when the answers were not necessarily encouraging to prospective students (IOW, they didn't sugarcoat things or prevaricate when asked tough questions).

Edinburgh, I love you, but your university isn't representing you well.

Nasty incident at Hearts-Celtic match. I went to one match at Tynecastle in 2008 and was struck by the understated but serious security presence (for a Cup match with Motherwell). I would have thought the security would have been a bit higher for a league match against Celtic, but apparently not.

This sort of behaviour has no place in football.

ETA: Thanks to posters here and on FB for correcting my bone-headed typing error.

Continuing my enjoyment of The City through the lens of Rebus, this time going back to the first (Ken Stott) season. The first ep has the usual cast plus Sharon Small as JR's museum-conservator GF (and fellow Hibs fan). Features a lot of the Old Town, as usual, including some exteriors of the Museum of Scotland. But even interiors of the airport get me all misty eyed. :-)

I broke down and bought some of the Ken Stott Rebus series. I still say that John Hannah is the definitive John Rebus. But I like Ken Stott as an actor, and I love the really comprehenisve shooting that they do in and around Edinburgh. I watched several of them in the last couple of days, and I recognised all sorts of places, large and small (from St Giles and the Castle to the Malt Shovel in Cockburn Street and the Jinglin' Geordie in Fleshmarket Close). I even recognised a couple of places I've not actually been yet, only planned to--a short cut away from the Edinburgh action in "The Naming of the Dead" moves the story to East Lothian and shots of Bass Rock and North Berwick Law (waves to Rho).

I really can't wait to see Auld Reekie again. :-)

So, after a couple of threads, it sounds as if a meet-up dinner next Wednesday night at Kalpna would work for most everyone who wants to come along. Is that a true statement? Can we swing meeting up around 8.00/8.30 pm? I know at least one person said that was about the earliest they could manage; maybe if some of us are free earlier we can start off with a pint (or an orange squash) beforehand.

Yay! Badger arriving in a Scottish capital near you in four days!

OK, two weeks today I'll be getting on a plane! (Well, OK, in the afternoon). Yay! :-)

Any more thoughts from E'burgh friends about a meet-up dinner during that week(Feb. 2-7)? Last time, I think there may have been a suggestion that Tuesday night might be good? And Rho suggested Kalpna, David Bann's, Henderson's, or Annapurna as places to go.

Excellent! Tickets purchased for flights to and from Embro, and accomodation booked for my stay. I'm planning on doing some day-touring around the Lothians with my volunteer dragoman and native scout, but would any of my local friends like to try to get together for drinks or dinner while I'm there? I'll be arriving 2 Fed and leaving 8 Feb.
