winterbadger: (slightly bemused cat)

I've had this discussion before with a few of you in person, but I can't recall posting the question here before. In any event, it came up the other day, and I was curious to know what other people say.

Some personals ads allow the user to specify whether they are interested in a 'long-term' or a 'short-term' relationship, and the two phrases are often used in general conversation.

But what do *you* take 'short-term' or 'long-term' to mean? Is it a relative thing? Or is it situational? And, if the latter, what situations does it vary on?

I'm not an expert on these things. But I would interpret short-term to mean "until I get bored", probably no more than six months, and long-term to mean "indefinitely, if it works out."
