Sep. 22nd, 2009 08:39 amI cleaned Rupert's chain thoroughly (though not comprehensively) on Sunday, and he and I went out for a spin this morning. Not very long or very far, but enough to get back on the bike. It's been a bad summer for exercise, and for biking in particular.
Given that it's the first time in forever, things went rather well. I got through the first mile without needing to stop for a breather (though maybe that was because II had to stop at the beginning several times to adjust the contacts for the computer. Damn the black souls of the Spokes service staff to hell--may they always have flat tires!) The weather is worsening, though. It's misty/foggy this morning, and that's because it's humid and getting warm again. The next 3-4 days are going to be an unpleasant combination of warm and wet. Just when you thought autumn was here...
I've also realised that if I ever get a black bike (I'm thinking maybe Rupert is one part of my chattels that should probably stay here in storage if I go to the UK), I will *have* to name him after Black Tom Fairfax. :-)
(For details, see here. And when exactly did Ferdinando go out of fashion as an English boy's name? ;-)

yay US! (not)
Sep. 22nd, 2009 04:50 pmI was looking at the website for Scotland's Commissioner for Children and young people and found this wonderfully cheering piece of information:
Gosh, I'm glad I live in such a modern and forward-thinking country.
The rights of children and young people are set out in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). These rights apply to all children under the age of 18. Every country in the World apart from the USA and Somalia has agreed to enforce these rights. To find out more about these rights.
