30/50Books: A Famine of Horses
Nov. 2nd, 2008 11:20 pmWhile trying to increase my percentage of nonfiction, I snuck this historical novel in, because it was too tempting not to.
'A Famine of Horses' is the first in series based on the real-life exploits of Sir Robert Carey, who served as an officer of the English Crown on the Anglo-Scottish border from 1593 to 1603. The author, who has written other historical novels based in the reign of Elizabeth I, seems to have done her research. Without knowing the period as a social historian would, the characters ring true to me and the background information seems genuine. The story is well told and the writing is engaging. I've ordered the other three books in this series, and I may try her other novels as well. Recommended.

Nov. 2nd, 2008 11:35 pmI had a nice, if not thoroughly productive day today. I spent a good deal of the morning lying around with tea, toast, and cats. The afternoon I spent out hiking along the C&O Canal with
redactrice and
shy_kat, hearing about their travels and taking int he beautiful fall foliage. After that we went out to the Redrock Canyon Grill in Silver Spring for dinner, then came back to my place and watched the first two episodes of 'Slings and Arrows'. They loved it, of course, so I loaned them the rest to watch while they're here.
Now, a little more email then time for bed.
