winterbadger: (colbert eh?)
Trying to find reporting on last night's events, I stumbled on a news article from this summer that carried the cheerful news that "On average, one person is shot or stabbed in the Langley Park area every week." Others report the prevalence of MS-13 recruiting there.

Langley Park is the next neighbourhood over, where all the excitement was going on last night. I knew it was rough; I didn't know it was that rough.

I was up all night with all of last evening's excitement, and I hadn't even heard that there was an armoured car robbery in town on Friday!

What, has this turned into 1920s Chicago?

About ten minutes after my last post, there's a siren goes off right down by the through street (about a block away), and I hear some shouting that seems to resolve into "DON'T MOVE! DON'T MOVE! DO NOT MOVE!" About 4-6 police cars gather, with lights going, there's a good deal of shouting, it seems like one of the units is a K-9, because there's a lot of serious barking (which then gets the neighbourhood dogs going). There's some talk, none of which I can quite hear, and then after roughly ten minutes, the police cars start shutting off their lights and dispersing; a couple of guys are still out in the street talking, but I still can't hear. Maybe someone got mistaken for a guy they're still chasing? It's hard, almost being able to pick up pieces, but not quite.

Now dogs are barking further off, across the stream and up the hill. Is the K-9 unit out trying to track down one or two runners still?

I was just going to bed, about fifteen minutes ago, when,

I would guess

maybe 2-4 blocks away

*CRACK*

then, right outside my window, a siren lights up and a police car (I didn't see it, don't know if it was marked or unmarked, must just have been sitting in our street, ?waiting?) zooms down the street to the corner and out onto the through street

then, maybe a little further away (or smaller caliber)

*crack-crack-crack-crack-crack*

more sirens, more highspeed cars

some squealing tires

lots more sirens, running, then shutting off

I can hear sirens from *long* ways away now coming into the area.

Now it's all gone quiet.

Now dogs barking, and manual sirens.

Now quiet again.

I'm going to guess that local law enforcement was expecting something, goodness knows what, to go down tonight, only maybe it didn't get handled quite as neatly as they expected. A little bit of Season One of The Wire right here in Langley Park.

I was going to say I hope no one got hit. But just as I was finishing this, I heard what is definitely an ambo siren. Now several, heading down the through street to Adventist.

Like the song says, "someone's going to emergency/someone's going to jail." :-(

Everton player robbed in his home

"Everton defender Phil Jagielka was threatened with a knife by thieves who broke into his Cheshire home.

The 27-year-old was watching his team play Hull City on television in the Carling Cup when three men stormed into the house in Knutsford.

He was forced to hand over jewellery and the keys to his Range Rover car after being threatened with a knife.

Police said nobody was hurt. Jagielka is the 11th Merseyside footballer to be burgled in recent years."

Eleven top-flight athletes have been robbed? Is this because they're all so prominent and wealthy, or is it demonstrative of the general crime rate in the UK?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THIS IS A MONTGOMERY COUNTY PRESS RELEASE BEING FORWARDED BY TAKOMA PARK POLICE DEPARTMENT

Arrest Made in Silver Spring Teen Homicide

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division - Homicide/Sex Section have arrested Hector Mauricio Hernandez, age 20, of the 8600 block of Flower Avenue in Takoma Park for the shooting death of 14-year-old Tai Lam, of the 1000 block of Quebec Terrace in Silver Spring.

Through the course of the investigation, Hernandez was developed as a suspect and detectives obtained an arrest warrant for first degree murder. He was arrested yesterday and is being held without bond. It has been determined that Hernandez is affiliated with the MS 13 gang. This crime remains under investigation and there may be additional arrests.

This investigation began on Saturday, November 1 at approximately 11:08 p.m., when police officers from the 3rd District were called to a bus stop on Piney Branch Road at Arliss Street for a shooting that had just occurred. Upon arrival they found three juvenile males on a Montgomery County Ride On bus suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Tai Lam died of his wounds that night.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a group of 10 to 12 friends, including the three victims who were shot, got on the Ride On bus in downtown Silver Spring. There is no evidence that these individuals are affiliated with any gangs. Another group of four or five male subjects got on the same bus at two different locations. There was a verbal exchange between members of the two groups. What exactly was said and the manner in which it was said is still under investigation. It is believed that the two groups were only together on the bus for a short period of time.

For unknown reasons the four or five subjects got off the bus at the Piney Branch Road and Arliss Street stop. As one of those subjects was getting off, he turned and fired a handgun from the area of the rear door of the bus into the bus striking the three teens. That subject has been identified as Hernandez. All three victims were transported to area trauma centers. The two surviving victims, a 14-year-old male and a 15-year-old male, were released from the hospital and continue to recover from their injuries.

Detectives from the Homicide/Sex Section of the Major Crimes Division are still asking anyone with information regarding this crime to call 240-773-5070. Callers may remain anonymous.
