I think that must be close to the most frustrating hour and a half I have ever spent. I feel like I'm in the Third World. Read more... )

DC lost to Houston in the Superliga. But the Mexican team we beat last Sunday, Club America, beat the Mexican team we tied the week before, Morelia, so they are both out and we advance to the semis. Where we play the Los Angles Becks-lxy. On August 14th. After playing them August 9th in a league match. This should be interesting.

In other soccer news, the women's team that were going through security at the Minneapolis airport at the same time I was turn out to be the Atlanta Silverbacks women's team who had just beaten the Michigan Hawks 4-0 and the Minnesota Lightning 5-2 to win the W-League Central Conference Championships in their first-ever playoff appearance.

In case anyone were concerned that [livejournal.com profile] soccer_fox might have been caught in the horrifying bridge collapse in Minneapolis. She was still in the Twin Cities when it happened, but she is OK, as are her family, and she's on her way home. I was actually talking to her on the phone at her parents' place when the first report came on the television there.

I've seen a number of newspaper articles and a couple of posts on LJ about the investigation into how the Army dealt with Pat Tillman's death. And it's made me think about my attitudes towards the US military. Read more... )

Well, I really, really tried. I got hold of someone at Expedia by (dependable) phone, and she was a trooper. She dug out all the rules and read through them. She tried all sorts of tricks to circumvent the BA restrictions. But after an hour and a half, she gave up and told me I had to call BA directly (again) because they were the only people who could rebook my ticket. She strongly advised me to not tell them I had booked through Expedia, just to say I had a past-date ticket to rebook and that I had been told I could so don't tell me you can't.

Needless to say, I am not confident that this is going to go anywhere, though I will give it a try (later). I strongly suspect that BA are going to refuse to do anything at all. Which will mean I am out $780, even though I paid for cancellation insurance.

This experience presents me with a variety of possible lessons, but what I think I'm taking away from it is: don't book a flight unless you are sure you want to take it, and once you have taken it, don't even *think* of canceling it for anything short of a serious emergency.

I've been enjoying a little solitude and having the place to myself, but I'm very happy that my dear one is home. I came downstairs this morning, humming Billy Joel to myself, and it's been in my head all day.

And now, if you'll excuse me, world, *I* am going home, so as to see my love.
