What's the first thing I see in the news this morning? A BBC article about two of the nearest churches to me.

from the BBC

Two church congregations in the US are to announce whether they are breaking from the American Episcopal Church amid the continuing row over gay clergy.

The Episcopal Church provoked a crisis among Anglicans worldwide by electing a gay bishop three years ago.

Members of two churches in Virginia have been voting to stay in the current structure or align themselves with the Archbishop of Nigeria, Peter Akinola.

He is a fierce critic of the ordination of gay priests.

The Falls Church and Truro Church are two of the biggest and oldest parishes in the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia.

Indeed George Washington used to be a regular in the pews of the Truro Church.

Now they are at the centre of a dispute over the ordination of gay and lesbian priests that could tear the Anglican Church apart.

Having been a member of the Falls Church for long enough to see what they were like and leave in disgust, I can say without equivocation that it is a hotbed of hatred, bigotry, and all the things that strike me as most unChristian. I expect that's probably why it's such a popular parish. Hatred and bigotry sell a lot better than love and understanding.

They should feel right at home with Peter Akinola.

phew!

I was feeling a bit down earlier, in part because I had failed to catch up with some reading for my class that I missed during my trip (took the wrong books). However, after some dinner (after which I felt better; I think partly I must just have been feeling low for lack of energy), I buckled down and finished reading what I needed to and made notes for my writing assignment this week. I signed onto the class board just now to start writing it, and found this comment from the professor on my writing for the first week: "Your postings in both units were easily among the best... you are obviously going to be one of the two or three key sustainers of some of the more complex, nuanced, and insightful discussion over the next several weeks."

*head swells to gigantic size*

Not going to be easy to live up to that kind of praise...
