I was thinking about the whole step down/reshuffle thing while I was listening to the news as I defragged the kitchen. I want to be delighted, because I loathe Jacqui Smith with a passion; the only thing that might top this is if Hazel Blears, whom I loathe with even more passion, were also to step down, be slung out on her ear, or something.
And yet I find myself just growing more and more depressed by the whole debacle, to the point where I'm finding it hard to raise any enthusiasm at the moment, the whole thing seems so badly broken. And despite what the Conservatives are claiming, I don't think a general election will solve anything right now.
Maybe Margaret Thatcher would oblige by dropping dead; I have sworn to drink as much champagne as I can decently manage the day she pops off, and she might help me get back into a party mood.

I think there's probably a small metal box in a tree somewhere with a bone from one of her fingers holding her lifeforce...
Not only was I pleased at remembering where I had come across this (in one of Lloyd Alexander's Taran books), but I got all sorts of nice memories when I went looking it up and found parts of The Prydain Companion online. Love those books.
Of course, the same concept shows up in the Harry Potter books with horcruxes.
You're not the only one! Sadly the stupid and intrusive policies will probably outlive her, and I'm not even much convinced that the Tories will cancel the dumb ID card project, even though they've loudly and repeatedly promised to.
It isn't that often that policies get rolled back, but I'm just glad to see someone who has made life so much more difficult and unpleasant for so many legitimate UK migrants or would-be migrants getting the boot.
And, yes, it's kind of painful when the principal likely alternative to a government one doesn't like is one one will probably like less...
