a few years ago my friend Shamenka got into a bit of an online argument with another AOL user about Roman remains. Sha lives in Musselburgh, which was the site of a Roman fort. Her opponent couldn't believe that we in Europe might live side by side or even on top of "sites of historical interest" because, well, surely they'd be all preserved in a park or something? :-)
The other user was, what, in the US or Canada? Probably the only places people wouldn't be accustomed to having the past cheek by jowl with the present.
as for AOL - I have tried to break her of the habit, but you know how hard it is to learn to use real internet clients when you've learned on AOL's own systems. She says that she has it for the "parental controls" - but her son is now an adult! (pair wee lad still isn't allowed to do anything on his own - she still goes everywhere with him)

Date: 2009-05-28 04:43 pm (UTC)I came to the article on the Facebook page for the UHI Centre for History.
Which I was reading because I was considering this program and then saw they were also working on providing a masters in history.
Some pretty damn' cool opportunities there.
