It would explain the multiple works by traditional "authors everyone was supposed to read" there are, while not including *anything* by other writers of equal prominence.

I'd heard of Enid Blyton (I think Michael Flanders make a passing reference to her), but I've never seen any of her books. Almost odd, given when she wrote and my parents' fondness for British authors.
