wonderful!

When Chris and Mel were staying here, I introduced them to Slings and Arrows (which my fab neighbours Christy and Kevin had given me). C&M started watching it, and I saw the first ep with them, but they were home during the day, so they watched the whole series through and the only other eps I saw were some of the King Lear ones at the end. So I'm watching it again to pick up the eps I missed with them. And it's simply marvelous, as it is every time.
I love Canadians and Canadian TV (I would dearly love to live there for a while, one of these days, and see if it's as neat a country as it seems to be), but this really rises above and is one of my favourite series of all time. It has immensely good plotting, superb writing, excellent acting. What tells me that it really conveys the best (and the worst) of its chosen field is that (a) it brings back memories of all the (limited number) of times I've worked in theatre (mostly in school) and all of the (many, many, many) theatre people I have known in my life, (b) it makes me feel, at least just for the period I'm watching it, as if acting and directing and managing in theatre, really good theatre, must be the most incredibly fulfilling and ultimate kind of existence around, and (c) it makes me want to reread all the Shakespeare I've ever read, read all the bits I haven't, and see as many performances and as much live theatre as possible. Yes, all entirely mad, I know, but that's what I mean--it's people seem more real than life, and it inspires you to see the absolute best of the theatre, while acknowledging and not diminishing the worst.
And I'm relaxing and indulging myself this evening because I've had a (surprisingly) busy day. I moved all the crap out of the back room that I want to get rid of and got all of the room tidied up (except the Table of Doom--next weekend for that). I moved all the stuff that's been waiting to go to Goodwill for months out of the bedroom. I also moved N's stuff that's waiting to go to her place out to the dining room so it will be easy for her to take away and so I can assemble the bookshelves I bought to go in the bedroom. I moved the cherry table and two of the side chairs from the kitchen into the bedroom until I can sell them, and put together the table and chairs I got from Ikea for the kitchen--I think they look quite good there! I did all the dishes that were accumulated, made a very healthy dinner (sauteed zucchini/courgettes with a side of cheese tortellini in pesto sauce). I clipped the cats' claws. And I went out for a bike ride. About the usual short neighbourhood jaunt, but for some reason I went up some of our killer hills on the way and got quite blown--but I feel marvelous!

Date: 2008-12-29 04:17 am (UTC)I think one of my things for 2009 is going to have to be creating more apposite LJ icons. :-) SN and S&A have so many ripe possibilities. Probably The Wire, B5, and WW too.

Date: 2008-12-29 06:04 pm (UTC)Canadian TV -- ever seen Forever Knight? I loved it till the series finale, when I wanted to kill the writers, but maybe that's because I'm a goober. If you like cop shows and vampires, check it out. ;-)

Date: 2008-12-29 06:26 pm (UTC)I haven't heard of Forever Knight--I'll check it out. Amusing tie-in; the star, Geraint Wyn Davies, has (according to his Wikipedia entry) played several times at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, that S&A is probably based on. *And* he plays an egoistic visiting star in Season Two of S&A (you'll love it!)
