What I spent my afternoon doing

Still needs a lot of work linking to other articles, but at least the utter tripe that was there before is improved 100%+.

The last thing the article needs, though, is the date of the British Legion's final disbandment. I wish I had it. It was fairly soon after the war as a number of their officers were drawing half-pay by 1784.

I was actually able to find something on the disbandment. The Raddall piece is very affecting, describing a great deal of the life of the Legion troopers who settle in NS after the war. Apparently there's a wee trace of the Carolinas still there--the author encountered some distinct accents still left in local speech int he area the Legion settled, even in the 1940s.

Off-reckonings, yikes! I wrote a paper for the grenadier company newsletter years ago on pay, and when I read it a couple of years ago it made *no* sense. Maybe one of these days...

Did you know that when they introduced reforms in the pay system at the end of the war that it was strenuously objected to by the poor people who complained that they had gone to all the trouble of learning how to do things the old way?

When were you in a grenadier company? I don't remember that.

Ha! No, I hadn't!

I was in the 42nd grenadier company for several years right after they formed. The backbiting and politics drove me back to the hat company. (The grens are now a much better group of people, for the record, after Jack Augustine--may demonic camels consume his entrails for a thousand years--and Rick Croy left.)
