I ran across this article on stuff small businesses really don't need and while most of it makes sense to me, the advice to avoid getting spam filters or anti-virus software seems just... stupid.

It is.

What they should not do is PAY for spam filter and anti-virus software. If they must use Windows for anything, there's the free (GPL) Clamwin scanner. It's quite effective and doesn't cost.

And there are lots of free spam filtering solutions, too.
