I'd kind of missed this news from last week

Actually, I think I hadn't as much missed it as heard that they had voted for two days of strike action and assumed that this meant there would be a two day strike...in late December.

Instead, one of the strike days is the day before we're leaving. Ugh.

At least there's one bright spot: we're flying into Manchester on BMI, so maybe this won't affect us too badly, since BAA doesn't run Manchester Airport. They do run Edinburgh, but if it's totally impossible to get through, we can always take a train. Trains do NOT run across the Atlantic.

did you have any luck with the Hearts tickets?

And did you see the news about the Motherwell player?

Thus far my distaste for unions has been an intellectual exercise, but now the rank bastards may effects me personally!

o.k. that said, the only problem is my return flight, 9am from Edinburgh on the 19th. That should be just after their 48 hour strike on the 17th.

Hey, I'm a union member, albeit not of that union. I'm with UCU. :)

We fly home to Heathrow from Arlanda (Stockholm) on the sixth, which is fortunate; however, as it turns out that first strike has been cancelled.

I'd strongly suggest carrying on any really important items, if at all possible. But hopefully you'll be okay.

Any chance of us seeing you outwith the wedding itself? :)

I bring good news ... looks like the strike has just been called off, according to Radio 4!

Radio 4 is covering it as I speak, and it's definite that the first strike is off. In fact, the other two are technically still 'on' until the deal is settled, but the union seem to have brokered a remarkably sensible way forward which it seems unlikely will be rejected, so I think you're okay.

There's still hope of settling it without a strike. I have to admit that I'm supporting the union. It may seem silly that they're striking to protect future employees' pensions, but it's more the fact that the union wasn't even consulted. *sigh* I'm just a big old union member and supporter, I suppose. That said, it's annoying (and I'm glad we fly back from Sweden on the sixth), but Manchester should be strike-free anyhow. At least you will be able to get a train from there, and I wonder if BMI would give you a voucher?

Never mind -- that first strike is definitely cancelled! And your return flight is between possible strikes.
