Celebration of my good grade was had in very wicked (but fun) spending of money in Borders. Picked up several CDs and an armload of books, including some more for my growing shelf of books on Pakistan, some good hiking books on Scotland, and a few fiction treats. CDs included some favourite artists and some new experiments. Since I waited patiently while the understaffed desk help got things sorted out (unlike the guy next to me, who was incredibly rude and unpleasant to the clerk and then, rather astonishingly, apologised), they gave me three of my CDs for free, instead of two, which was the current sale term.

Plus a package from a Brit Shop arrived for me with a box of PG Tips, lemon/lime marmalade, and gooseberry jam! Yum!

That was an experiment, but I find I quite like it! I had several oatcakes (Walker's rather than my preferred Nairn's, but it's what was on sale at World Market) with the gooseberry jam, and a couple with the marmalade, for afters last night, and they were delicious.

I can understand avoiding paying World Market's ridiculous prices for PG Tips, but if you'd also like to avoid paying the equally-inflated Brit Shop price for it, I've seen it at at least one branch of Safeway, and rumor has it that it's also sold at Wegmans, for not-all-that-much-more than regular Liptons Bad American Tea.

I made Gooseberry Fool last week, although in a smaller quantity than I would ever ave expected to do so - Whole Foods sells gooseberries in six-ounce packages, when everyone knows gooseberries are supposed to be sold by the pound. Still, it was very tasty :)

I wasn't bothered by World Market's prices, only the fact that they had nothing but decaf PG Tips! I do get Branston Pickle and good Indian-food supplies at Safeway, but have never found British tea there. I've never actually been to Wegman's, only out of fear that once inside I would never be able to leave without leaving my entire weekly paycheck behind...

I don't think it's a standard stock item at Safeway, so I assume it depends on local demand. Lots of British expats in the area = store stocks drinkable tea. If you're ever in the Chevy Chase/Rockville areas, Rodmans stocks PG Tips but their prices are ludicrous. I think they've got Rose's lime marmalade too, but I have resisted buying it on the grounds that I do not need to be both broke and the size of a semi-trailer. The same goes double for Jaffa Cakes and chocolate Hobnobs. World Market and Rodmans both used to stock tins of Birds custard powder, but both discontinued it at approximately the same time that Giant stopped selling Birds Imported English-Style Dessert Mix (which was simply custard powder with an amusing name). What, did the government issue a ban on flavored cornstarch without me noticing?
