I went to the farmers' market in the morning with C&M and got some of the wonderful Struan bread that one of the local bakeries does, whole-milk yoghurt, pear cider, crab cakes, eggplant, lettuce, onions, apples, broccoli, a cumber, a red pepper, and some pork-and-French-herb sausages.

We came home, I cleaned cat boxes and then went out for a bike ride on the W&OD Trail, doing 8.6 miles and getting home just before Bryan arrived. I took a quick shower and B and I went off to play a Napoleonic miniatures game with Phil at his new home (very nice, too!) It was an enjoyable game, even though frustrating for B & P at times due to the vagaries of dice. B and I came home, stopping off at Five Guys for dinner, and played two games of Carcasonne with C&M (both of which M won, to no one's surprise :-) while watching MLS playoff games.

Today is likely to have a DC United match (you were right, Bryan; it's at 6, not 5.30), preceded by a tailgate, possibly preceded by more biking. Some housecleaning really ought to happen; we'll see if it does.

Other notes: C&M have a totally *adorable* foster kitten. He got hit by a car and lost one leg, and the Feline Foundation wheedled the emergency vet staff into knocking down the price of surgery to something their coffers could afford, then needed an immediate placement, so of course the "goofy about cats" people stepped up. I'm astounded at how fast this little guy has adapted to operating with one fewer peg. He doesn't seem to be depressed or unable to cope. He's just bopping around with a slightly odd gait, purring and loving everything and everyone in sight and wanting to play! What a trooper!

It's really amazing how well animals adapt to losing a limb. I saw two cats during the years I volunteered at the shelter who were missing legs, and they were totally fine w/ it once they'd healed up from the surgery - no real acclimating to it, and no depression.

yeah, that's one of the things I learned when my sis's cat got diagnosed with vaccination induced sarcoma. Cats do fine with only 3 legs. Insist that your cat gets vaccinated on the legs - and not between the shoulder blades 'cause if they develope a sarcoma there there is nothing that can be done. Bono was "lucky" and they were able to remove enough tissue without removing the whole leg. (it was a distemper shot)

two points:

1. you are making me HONGRY! There's nothing like dorm food - even good dorm food (harvard's is really tasty all things considered) - to make a girl drool on reading a list like that one. *sigh.* BUT i did find a place that sell oatcakes, so I've got my room stocked with my (obscenely expensive, over here) Scottish addiction - in fact, I'm munching on one right now. Damn tha time-change and not being able to get breakfast until noon in-my-head time. Grumble.

2. Kitten!! Do we get pictures? Poor wee thing ... one of our cats (the one you can't see but who was sitting on my chest when this userpic was taken) broke his leg as a kitten when the slat of a bed fell on him, then was shot through the hips as an adult by some bored hunters, best we can figure - and he's still the lovingest, trustingest wee thing you've every laid eyes on. He was lucky and never had to get anything amputated, but he still walks with a pretty marked swagger. But yeah - cats are pretty remarkably adaptable.

unfortunately, I've not been able to find Nairns on this side of the world -- the specialty foods place carries Walkers, though, so it's an acceptable second. Though I have to admit I've always had a fondness for the Orkney ones myself :)

mmmmmmm, oatcakes ...

I'm reminded of the saying that dogs are born with "three legs and a spare." It applies to cats, too. In fact, my old vet had an office cat that was paralysed in its back legs, and she had no trouble scooting around using only her forelegs. Of course, the floor was linoleum, but still...

Oh yay for Farmer's markets! Alas, our season is over, but it was good while it lasted.
