In case there's any confusion - the two sections of my comment weren't intended to be directly connected - the first part was to you but the second was more of a general comment.
But it's still scary no matter what. In fact, there have been a frightening number of completely random attacks lately.
Yeah, what pisica said. Leith is slowly becoming gentrified,so there's the expected tensions between those who have and those who haven't, but I have lived here for about 7 years and would not say there is a particular problem with gangs or drug use (not more so than other areas, that is). In fact, I love it here and would be loathe to leave the area. The days of Trainspotting are receding faster and faster.
At least arrests were made. The kid (now adult) who tried to burn down my school (he was a former student who didn't do well there) is out of jail soon. If he appears at the school, we're to contact the police immediately. The fire was in November of 2002, right after I started in September 2002. He managed to destroy about six classrooms and damaged quite a few others -- mine included. How was he caught? He went to a party and bragged about it. Some of his friends had better morals and turned him in!
His younger sister, whom I teach, still is at the school. Guess what she wants to be? A police officer. There's hope for her! :)
Arson, btw, is very common in schools over here. Attacks on teachers aren't as common, luckily.
Oh, and I have friends who live in Leith. I've walked around Leith very late at night on my own. It's not a bad place at all. (I can think of many places in the US that are far worse than the worse places in the UK. Heck, I grew up in Philly. :)

Date: 2006-07-17 03:16 pm (UTC)Tom was born in Leith. It apparently used to be an okay area, but now has some trouble with gangs and heroin. :(
