bad, bad servers!

Well, email seems to be working again, but I never received any reply to my service request, and neither on this occasion nor the previous outage has Dreamhost taken the trouble to apoligize to their customers or offer any compensation for their loss of service.

Does anyone have a suggestion for domain and mail hosting? I'd like to get rid of these rubes ASAP. US or UK, either one, since I have an ISP for the moment who actually provides the connection.

Web Hosting Services from Dec 2005

In December 2005 I was shopping around a lot, and came up with the following list:

BlueHost.com
ixwebhosting.com
MidPhase.com
LaughingSquid
DreamHost

I *like* the people at LaughingSquid the best, but they did not (then) offer everything I wanted. BlueHost and DreamHost came in tops feature-wise and value-wise. I settled on DreamHost to stay out of Utah (BlueHost is homed in Utah), but that is trivial compared to working servers.

I am sure the market has moved since then. Interland (which was outrageously expensive enough to force me to move last December) has become something else (web.com?) and gotten cheaper.

Webhosting is becoming a commodity market, and there will be more chrun and confusion. Best not to hold grudges and simply bounce around until you find stability (which may very well end up being DreamHost after they learn some important lessons).

Dreamhost clearly learned that NFS in production service is bad... something the company I work for learned the hard way about 8 years ago.

Hopefully they'll improve. If you find a better deal - please share it with us... I have enough domains now that I can spread my business around a bit...

Well, I figure there are technical mistakes and customer service mistakes. Everyone is going to make technical mistakes, whatever their field, sometime. Making the same mistake (or one that has the same effect for your customers) repeatedly is not acceptable. Nor is making customer service mistakes. JMO/
