Mel hints at another film
Mar. 23rd, 2004 09:14 amMel Gibson looks set to provoke further antipathy among the Jewish community with plans to make a film about the story behind the festival of Hanukkah.
The Jewish festival of Hanukkah celebrates the Maccabees' victory against Greek king Antiochus IV, 165 years before Jesus was born.
"The Maccabees' family stood up and made war," said Gibson, speaking on a US chat show last week.
"They stuck by their guns and they came out winning. It's like a Western."
Mel making a film about a gang of bloody-minded, intolerant, murdering zealots? Sounds like a match made in heaven.

Date: 2004-03-24 04:30 am (UTC)As far as the actual history goes, if Edward I hadn't been a power-mad, grasping expansionist tyrant, England would never have had to endure all the subsequent centuries of Wallace- and Bruce-loving. The only difference between Edward's invasion of Scotland and Saddam Husssin's invasion of Kuwait was that Edward bought a figurehead to keep in his hip pocket and install as "king". Otherwise, pretty similar. Lucky they didn't know about Scotland's oil wealth then, or they might have stayed even longer. ;-)
