She and I attended a wedding at Doughregan many years ago, that of our college friend Phil, who is mentioned on page two of the article. We got to wander a little through the house; it's wonderful!
"independent, steely resolve"? Yes, that sounds like all the Carrolls I know...

Re: WTF!!!
Date: 2006-02-16 04:09 pm (UTC)Phil, the son and heir to the estate, is quite a peripatetic soul. After I knew him at Williams (where his wargame collection--probably larger then than mine is now--formed the basis of our wargame club), he went to U Chicago and got a PhD in History. Then he worked for a while for Educational Testing Service (the SAT people), then came back to MD and started trying to pull the estate back into shape, then got married and moved to Montreal to go to medical school at McGill. Now he's living in VT--the last I heard he had bought a practice and was a GP, but Chris Googled him and now he's a medical professor at Dartmouth.
One of my favourite Phil stories is that when he was living in Baltimore, his townhouse got broken into and robbed. He hired a PI to track his stuff down, and it turned out after a while that the guy has working a deal with the thieves to fence his stolen good back to him. It took a deal of persuading to get Phil to go to the police; he wanted to simply hire someone to kill the PI and the thieves...
