Inspired by recent conversations, I finally began my wargame inventory. I say "began" because so far I've only done the baordgames, not the miniatures rules (a few dozen) or the RPGs (may just sell those off instead) or the card games (ditto). And I've only recorded name and published so far, not all the other info I have spaces for in the database I built.

But I ended up at about 450, give or take. Which means I'm probably never going to actually play all of them, am I?

So then I thought, "Well, at least I've played lots of ASL scenarios, right? At least there I'm sure to be doing well." Think again, Spoor. I got what I think is the lastest Chronology of War (a listing that some ASL grognard puts together of all the official, unofficial, and [published] amateur ASL scenarios), and it's currently topping out at almost 2700 scenarios. *Maybe* I've played 100, but I doubt it.

*sigh* I really need to be independently wealthy and have several friends who are also and who love games.

I'm at 175 games (not counting RPGs) and I know I have stuff I'll never play. I did a purge of about 100 or so 5 years ago and don't miss them, now I try to only buy games I think I have a reasonable chance of playing. I bought Seven Ages despite that though, it just looked too cool.

You're counting them? This is very self-destructive behavior. You will either end up frustrated and depressed, or else have some sort of spiritual rebirth involving getting rid of your material possessions and then tediously annoying everyone you know by telling them they need to be saved like you were. So knock it off. :-)

And if you must count them, you need a different measurement scale. You don't count your books or CDs, you figure based on shelf-feet, right? And one does wine cellar calculations by the case, not the bottle. I would submit that the appropriate scale for games is either the moving box or the closet. (And it sounds like you definitely want to go with the latter.) "I've got 450 wargames" definitely sounds worse than "I have a closet and a half of games."

Actually,, now that I write that, they both sound pretty bad. Sorry dude, I guess the only consolation I can offer after all is the reminder that at least your games aren't turning to vinegar while they gather dust. Plus, you can rationalize (as I do in my weaker moments) by thinking "But it's too early to predict which games will capture my kids' imagination years from now, and I owe it to them to give them every possible chance to enjoy the rich variety of experience that life has to offer." And that's why I need to own three different battalion/brigade-level, multi-map simulation of World War III on the central front.

Please tell me that RPG stands for something besides "rocket propelled grenade."

OK, you have to admit that it's pretty cool to have a cute girlfriend for whom "RPG" evokes images of anti-tank weapons.
