OK, am I totally insane? or at least wrong (which I think might be worse...)

I had always understood that "diocese" was pronounced "DYE-uh-sis" and that it's plural "dioceses" was pronounced "DYE-uh-sees".

However, after strewing through a report on WAMU this morning that kept using what I thought was the wrong pronunciation, I got to work and Hyperdictionary told me:

DIOCESE: Dictionary Entry and Meaning
Pronunciation: 'dIu`sees

So I'm all confused.

DIE-uh-sees or DIE-oh-sees is how I've *always* heard it pronounced (more of an oh than an uh if the speaker was European).

Interestingly, the plural seems to have more of an oh sound, too. Still, mostly sounds like DIE-uh/oh-see-sehz.
