winterbadgerNora and I had a simply fab weekend, marred slightly at the end by her coming down with the flu. Having had the flu this season (back at the beginning of the fall), I can miserably predict this will do more than slightly mar her next few days; the only way I would want to have this particular version again would be if I could spare her having it at all by doing so. However, it was pretty clear this morning that she's already suffering the torment of the damned that is the 2004/2005 flu: muscle aches, fever, more muscle aches, congestion (I somehow skipped that, but I think I got more muscle aches instead), coughing, wonky insides, and, did I mention muscle aches? The first morning I woke up feeling as if I had been pulverized by an angry rhino with a cricket bat. Nora, of course, being a trooper, groans somewhat, says, "Ow," and smiles like an angel. Me, I'd be writhing in agony.
That doesn't at all detract, though, from the tremendous pleasure that it was to have most of two days to hang out with her and do LOTS of talking and snuggling. Yesterday we trucked over to the National Press Club for her interview on the Iraqi elections with the CBC (which ended up being a little late, around 11.40, because they were pushing things around on their schedule), in which she was marvelous. We ran into John Pike, from globalsecurity.org, who was the Washington interview before Nora and who talked a good deal about security issues, leaving Nora wondering what *she* was going to talk about (she had plenty of good stuff to say about "next steps" and the diversity of the Iraqi electorate). Then we drove over to the building on North Capitol St. that houses Fox (as well as NBC and, I think, CNN), left the car, and had lunch at Union Station. We trundled back in the snow and signed in, then I waited while she got put through make-up (they did a very professional job for the cameras, but anyone who saw the interview should know that she doesn't generally wear make-up and looks much nicer without it than even good TV makeup people can do). We got schmoozed by Newt Gingrich and Jon Kyl, who were on before her, and I got to sit around with Adm. Woolsey, who was on just before she was and came back to the green room to havea bannanna and watch some of the other interviews. Dr. B. was very polite and nonpartisan, upholding the finest traditions of her institution, but did her best to point out some of the clouds of continuing concern that were otherwise being banished by all the sunny yea-sayers on America's "fair and balanced" news channel (I still can't believe the guy says that with a straight face, or that a news organization that expects people to take it seriously employs Geraldo Rivera as a foreign correspopndent). She was, put simply, excellent.
We stopped to do some grocery shopping on the way home, then she took care of some stuff at home while I continued to make friends with her cats and tried to catch up on the reading for my class. She made some delicious chili, and we opened a nice bottle of shiraz we'd found. More good talking and snuggling, then time for bed, by which time the flu onset was really beginning to be grievous. Poor N got some sleep, but was feeling quite rotten by the time morning rolled around and decided to stay home and try to sleep some more. I did everything I could (not much) to make things easier for her, then took off for work. I'm torn between hoping she's feeling enough better by this evening that she can teach her class (because I know she really doesn't want to reschedule it) and hoping that she just stays home from that too and gets lots of rest.
So, a truly wonderful weekend, but my poor sweetie is going to be feeling pretty rotten for a while... :-(

Date: 2005-01-31 07:20 pm (UTC)I took a tumble Saturday while rappelling at an indoor rock-climbing gym. Fell 15 ft or so onto my back. They get very panicky about possible back injuries so I was carted off for x-rays. No real damage, just feeling a bit battered.
