crushes

I seem to be developing a new crush. This happens when I think about someone a great deal. Or maybe when it happens I think about that person a lot. I'm not sure which comes first. Anyway, I've certainly found myself thinking about her, and she's started showing up in dreams (including, yes, those sorts of dreams). This morning I woke up and found my head full of torch-song lyrics (you now, the kind where "lock and key" gets rhymed with "return to me" and frequent references are made to "this heart of mine." Yikes!).

Crushes generally don't work out for me. Usually in high school and college this was because I was far too scared to actually *tell* someone I had a crush on her. Later there was the whole "being in an open relationship" thing that tended to put people off. People don't always appreciate being the object of a crush, either, I've found; some folks are put off by the strength of the emotion involved, or distrust the way it can spring up seemingly overnight (since they don't know you've been mooning about like a lovesick calf for weeks...) And it can be awkward if the other person just wants to be friends. (As happened with my most recent crush on LJ-less Amy.)

So I don't generally say anything to people I get a crush on anymore, at least not unless there's some obvious indication it might be reciprocated. I just treasure the warm, happy feeling it gives me, keep an eye out for signs of reciprocation, and go my merry way, quietly singing selections from the immortals (Roberta Flack, James Taylor, the early Beatles...)

But be warned; I know you're reading this. There's a crush headed your way. :-)

BTW, it's snowing here. It started off as flurries I didn't think would stick, but it's gotten heavier. There may actually be a noticeable accumulation. Snow on Boxing Day is better than no snow at all. :-)

You had me worried! There's no snow here right now, and I'm guessing that it's going to sweep by and miss us again.
