I had a very pleasant Saturday, all things considered.
I exchanged a few emails with Amy in the morning, then we met up to hike in Rock Creek Park. I'd promised to loan her my Lucy Kaplansky CDs, and I tried to burn her a CD of some of my other favourite artists, but I haven't used my computer to do that before, so it was clearly going to be a leanring experience and take a while, so I just brought a couple ofcomplete CDs instead. She loaned me one of an artist she likes, Daniel Lanois, which I listend to on the way home. It's more electronic and less acoustic than I expected from some of his other stuff I'd heard, but it's very compelling. Haunting, in parts. And very well produced, which is no surprise, since he is better known as a producer for Brian Eno, U2, Peter Gabriel than for his own work.

I wasn't sure if she'd have had lunch (I hadn't time--my usual "suddenly realize I need to leave *now* and do several things before doing so pattern was in evidence--though I did manage to arrive on time, to my astonishment), so I made a couple of sandwiches and brought along some grapes and two bottles of water. We had talked about going to Brooke's party in the evening, so I brought a long a change of clothes, in case I didn't have time to go home first. Unfortunately, one of the water bottles leaked all over the inside of my pack, so I not only didn't have the pack to stick my coat in when I got warm, the clothes I'd brought were all wet. :-/

We had a simply lovely hike. The weather was very nice. The trails were a bit muddy here and there, but quite passable on the whole. We did about half of the loop all around the outside of the park, the Western Ridge Trail and the Valley Trail (I think) in about two hours (we didn't go further north than Fort De Russy, just north of the Military Road). It was nice to spend more time with Amy; she's a terrific person: smart, funny, active, good humoured with a fairly dry wit, a very easy person to talk to and (IMO) very pretty. :-) We exchanged stories about our animal chums, anecdotes about camping (she's quite an experienced backpacker--I could learn tons from her), and just generally chatted. We passed someone riding in a field, and she watched for a while and explained all sorts of things to me about the use of posture and other signs to communicate with horses, and the ways in which horses tend to understand those signals (or get bored and start ignoring them :-).

We both headed home to get cleaned up after our exertions. Unfortuantely, on the way home she realized that a corner of one of her teeth had broken off; that and a lack of sleep the night before made her think that an early night might be indicated. So I trucked over to Brooke's party sans date but with Chris and Melissa and Jason, who was at a loose end. We had quite a blast; as one would expect from Brooke, there were masses of delicious food and drink, and lots of interesting people to talk to (some of whom I had met before, some of whom I had only heard about). We stayed until about ten, then headed home (Jason was going to stay the night in the spare bedrom upstairs). When we got back, Melissa and Jason were feelling in the mood for a game, so we played Carcasonne, which Chris won by a narrow margin, much to her delight.

Today's Xmas tree expedition has apparently been cancelled, so I think I'm going to do a tiny bit of cleaning, and either try to straighten out all the correspondence, bills,a nd other papers that have piled up since the last time I threw half of them away, or get out one of the many (hardcore historical) games I have sitting around that I haven't played yet and learn it. O r maybe both. And perhaps finally get tot he Sunday afternoon pick-up soccer game.
