yeah, well, I cna't figture out if this is affiliate timidity in the face of a fine-crazy FCC or more fo a self-censorship due to fear of a perceived "rise fo the right." Your sense?
My impression is that it's the former, but that the former is created by the latter. Mr Powell is a crank and a seriously-loosend wingnut, but I think his ludicrious policy decisions are based on guidance and expectations conveyed to him by members of the administration when he was selected. I wish his dad would give him a smack. The whole Janet Jackson episode, which should have been treated as tawdry and cheap, but hardly worth noticing, got blown up into a tempest by the outlandishly dramatic reaction of the FCC, and the result has had (IMO) a chilling effect on the mainstream entertainment media.
Say, what was your reaction to the replacement of Ashcroft with Gonzalez? I think it's bound to be good news for people who are freakishly afraid of religious conservatives, but no good news for people who are concerned with the preservation of human rights and the rule of law. Even the military has, apparently, let it be known that they think he's too anti-democratic.
Yes, I saw this. It's very sad. But that's exactly what happens with censorship, the tacky junk stays, and the art gets censored.
As to whether it's overreaction, the Congresscritter who wanted NBC fined for the naked bodies lined up to be exterminated in Schindler's List just got elected to the Senate.
