I will add, however, that I don't think any religious group should be tying itself to a party-- for the sake of religious teachings and for the sake of the nation.
The trouble has been and I think will continue to be how the Democratic party can speak to moral values (including alleviating poverty) and incorporate both religious progressives and secularists.
