and while I'm uploading pictures
Aug. 17th, 2006 08:33 amHere are the photos I took of the monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery who come to visit Hampton every summer.
The interior shots are of the closing ceremony of their visit of teaching and fundraising. The ceremony involved music, chanting, and the erasure of the sand mandala they created while they were there. Afterward they gave away little packets with some of the sand.
The outside shots are of their procession to the nearby river, where they had more music, more chanting, and scattered the remaining sand and flowers into the water.

and last but not least...
Aug. 17th, 2006 08:44 amSome photos of a painting of one Gad Colton. The subject, a progenitor of my mother's line, was born in Longmeadow, Mass., in 1754, served as a private soldier during the Revolution in Col. David Leonard's Regiment (I don't find Leonard listed as a Continental officer, so I'm guessing that was a state or militia regiment), became a sea captain merchant of some wealth, was elected a selectman of Monson, Mass., in the 1790s, and died in 1831.
I couldn't quite get a shot without glare (there's a chandelier and a table that prevent one from shooting straight on...)

I seem to have mysteriously lost about 6 pounds (nearly half a stone ;-) in the past two weeks. I'm terribly chuffed, though I don't quite understand it. I haven't gotten nearly enough exercise lately, and I've not done quite as well as I meant to with food and drink. But I am eating a bit healthier, and a bit less, so that must be part of it. I'm back three notches on my belt, to the last hole; I may have to get a smaller one! :-)

Aug. 17th, 2006 06:32 pmLord Peter Wimsey says something fairly witty at one point about the dangers of riding two hobby horses--if only I had only two! I think one of the reasons "modern" life is so hectic is because we all have so many "leisure" activities (or, in the case of the less fortunate, too many jobs to allow for *any* leisure...)
