big honkin' storm coming in. earlier I couldn't see Reston because of the haze; now everything past teh DTR/Rt 7 interchange is hidden behind a curtain of greyish-green opacity. I'm going to have to turn the lights on, and any of you who know how I feel about fluorescent lighting know how dark it must be if I'm contemplating that.

Edit: You know, if it's still doing this in two or three hours, I'm just going home. DCU haven't been worth getting soaking wet for in quite some time.

We had a loud crack of thunder immediately followed by all our power going out for about 30 seconds, but no rain at all. It's starting to lighten up out here, for whatever that's worth.

Downtown, it was a disaster. COnnecticut Avenue was a river... I stepped off the curb into ankle deep water and waded across it to my bus stop.... waited patiently under my huge brand new umbrella as the rain pounded down so hard on it that it actually came THROUGH it... the bus got there, I tried to step up and then close the umbrella and wound up getting soaked...

As the metro bus took me the 5 block to where I pick up my commuter bus, it started to hail. The bus itself was so full of holes in the roof that I seriously considered putting my umbrella back up.

We got to my stop, I got off, getting soaked again in the process... stood in the freezing wind and blowing, driving rain waiting for my commuter bus... One showed up, but it wasn't going my way. There was one behind it, and just as it started to pull up the volume of rain went up exponentially, along with the power of the wind. So harsh it almost collapsed the umbrella on me. I fought with it, got it closed and staggered onto the bus, now drenched to the skin from head to toe... and me wearing white slacks and a lovely summer top that is barely street legal when it's DRY... only to find out this was ALSO not my bus. So back out into the driving, freezing rain I go.

Another 10 minutes later, when the storm has finally mostly passed, and it's just chilly wind and a slight drizzle, the bus shows up... almost 20 minutes late. I get on... the driver looks sheepish and apologizes and I laugh unsteadily and tell him it's no problem, we can't blame him for the weather.... stagger back to nearly the back of the bus before I find a seat... and start the long ride home.

That bus rider took 2 hours. On the HOV lanes. It was amazing. I didnt get home til almost 7pm.

Be very glad you weren't in DC for the mess.
