Because I use this journal as my sounding board, I do a fair bit of complaining here. I feel I have a fair bit to complain about (more than some, less than others), but I'm sure it gets boring after a while.

Every once in a while, however, something happens that is so nice that it really needs to be celebrated.

One that happened recently I feel very remiss in having not acknowledged before now. Last month my niece Sarah got married. I couldn't be happier for her. She has a totally beautiful little boy (she's just been sharing pictures of him bundled up in the UK's big snow, and he's adorable). And she has a newly minted husband who, as little as I've had a chance to get to know him so far, seems like a smart, funny, decent guy who really loves her and their boy tremendously (in true subdued, English, Colin-Firth fashion :-). I am as happy as Punch for her, for all of them. (If only, as Captain Blackadder says, I could be as handsome as Punch...)

The other really pleasant thing that I'm prompted to write about is that I've reconnected with an old friend lately. My buddy Mike (who goes by [livejournal.com profile] g_eisenhorn) and I fell out of touch a few years ago when bad things happened with a mutual friend. Some water's gone under the proverbial bridge, we crossed paths, and we've had some time to hang out together again. We find just as much pleasure in each other's company as we always did; we still see eye to eye on a great deal and enjoy talking about history and politics and everythign un. It isn't often one finds as good a friend as Mike (though I'm fortunate enough to have found a few in my time), reconnecting is an  unexpected and terrific pleasure.

As usual, while winterbadger flogs himself for complaining so much about the world, he gives himself no credit.

While I could offer lots of (ineffectual) excuses, I was responsible for allowing our friendship to lapse, inexcusably. After making contact again, I find I have been accepted back without any questions or reservations.

The best thing I can think to wish for any reading this during this holiday season is that you all may have friends as gracious and generous in your lives as I do.
