Gerrit, the governor general, a wise old soldier, knows the five weaknesses of his fortress. He tells only his wife, whom he loves. Margaret, having learned the five secrets, will tell her lover what they are, but only if he meets her price. The spymaster, Louis, wants his best young spy to find out the secrets, and he will give him a hundred gold sovereigns for each secret Eli finds out. Eli, the young spy, is eager to please his master, but he is saving up to buy a ring for his fiancee. Holst, the jeweler, will sell him the ring he wants, but only for a thousand sovereigns.
How can Holst be satisfied, Eli be happy, Louis approve his new young spy for duty, Margaret get her heart's desire, Gerrit retain his honour, and the citadel be safe?
