from our boss:
I swear, there's nothing like working in an employee-owned company, where every day employees take of is seen by management (the only people wealthy enough to own substantial stock in the company) as a hit to pructivity and therefore a drop in potential stock price.
OTOH, this is someone who apparently, on taking over our branch, discovered that the previous manager had been paying everyone below-market rates to as to generate higher earnings figures. Her reaction? Across the board salary hikes, to match market rates. It had sound business sense behind it too (looking more long-term than the previous manager), but I have to appreciate that.
But would it really kill us to get a day off? OTOH, I'd hardly spend it mourning Reagan, so I suppose I might as well work...
As most of you are aware, the Government has declared Friday, 11 June, a Federal Holiday. This does NOT affect [our] holiday schedule. In other words, you are to treat this day just like you would the other holidays the Government gets that we do not (e.g., Veteran's Day, Columbus Day). You will be expected to either work a normal work day, or if you are unable to get access to your work location you must work with your PM and/or Division Manager to make other arrangements such as working at [our main office] or making up the 8 hours at some other time during the two week pay period.

Date: 2004-06-08 01:54 am (UTC)Of course, this is all good--in theory. Due to the nature of my boss's work it isn't always practical to take some holidays off. When I was keeping track of these things I'd give myself comp time. But I haven't kept track of hours at all in 4 or 5 years.
So I've decided if Friday is clear and my hand and foot are up to riding I'm taking the day off. If it's not clear, or I'm not up to riding I might as well work.

Date: 2004-06-09 02:22 pm (UTC)I took off the Friday in Sept. that was a national day of mourning, specifically to attend service at which folks in the congregation who'd died in the Towers were remebered. That was "chargeable" vacation time, though I will say that to attend on-campus 9/11 memorial services, we were all to be permitted to attend without "charging" time off.
I think folks wanted to be reasonably certain that time off was for memorials, not for goofing off. :/ It's that puritan thing.
But, for example, the May Memorial Day. . . how many generally think about war sacrifice? Many folks go shop, and this year that rather bothered me, in part because I too went shopping.
